St. Anthony Park - Maps (http://www.sapcc.org/neighborhood/maps.php - broken link)

You can't tell by this map, but it is pretty close to the main campus; you could walk from the 280/University Ave intersection to the campus in about 15 minutes.

This part of the city (St. Paul) is pretty nice and quiet. I wouldn't mind living there myself.

My husband and I both went to grad school at the University of Minnesota, and if remember correctly the student family housing is just south of the Saint Paul campus. So if you do get that (we did not get off the waiting list in time) she would just hop on the intercampus bus to the Mpls campus. Easy and free. We ended up renting the the "Uptown" neighborhood of Mpls practically on Lake and Hennepin which was very fun, and just took the bus on Hennepin to campus. That was 14 years ago, though, and rents have increased considerably since then.

I would recommend near the Saint Paul campus - Lauderdale, Falcon Heights, Saint Anthony Park - and taking the campus bus over to Mpls. Right around the Mpls campus is definately more urban and filled with undergrads and not-so-well kept rentals, but as I've never been to LA it may not seem bad to you at all. I happen to love the area around the Saint Paul campus - very residential and quiet, and the campus is beautiful. And one of my favorite "delis", Abu Nader, is right there on the corner near the student housing.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, Abu Nader has closed. As has the Parkview Cafe 1/2 mile south on Raymond Ave.

While Uptown has gotten considerably more expensive over the last decade I think that people have a notion that Uptown is super expensive. There are some properties that go for major bucks, but the majority of Uptown is really not any more expensive then the rest of South Minneapolis.

Oh, bummer.

A place called Shish opened very close to our house so we've been going there since it opened. It's good, but we've always said that the food at Abu Nader was better!

I'm sad to hear that it closed.
