I have been wanting to move to MSP for quite some time now. I was planning on moving here January 1st 2013. But now im having concerns. Im not sure what to do.

My concerns are:

I have limited financial resources. If I move Jan 1st, Id likely have about 3,000 in cash, and 1,000 available on a credit card. This includes money needed for gasoline to drive from Arizona. This money would have to be used for rent when I find a place to stay, and food / gas while im looking for work.

I know absolutely nobody in Minnesota. I would have to find a roommate who would let me move in and pay cash for rent up front.

I do not have a job lined up in MSP, and I would have to start looking ASAP as soon as I get there. Id be willing to take anything reasonable, just something to start an income flow.

Im concerned about the winter / cold. Im not very experienced in cold weather.

On the other hand, if I stay in Arizona (where I currently live), I feel that:

Im wasting my time. Wasting more months / possibly years of my life living somewhere where I am unhappy.

Not daring to DREAM. Taking the "safe road" by staying put, which is actually the most unsafe thing I can do, giving up on my dream to move.

I wish I was a teenager / early 20's again, where I did not think about all this kinda stuff and just had the carelessness to just GO and trust that it will all work out. Im 29 now, and thinking logically and carefully has its drawbacks at times!

I would appreciate any advice or help / support. Thank you.

I would wait just a few more months, to April or so, only because a lot of landlords don't allow you to move out during the winter months so that may make finding a place harder. Add to that the possibility of bad weather when you arrive and you might be living in your car for a while--not too fun in the -20° weather.

Agree. Just wait a few more months when more jobs open up (they call summer in MN "construction season").

Thats funny that you mention you are leaving AZ to come to MN. I am am leaving MN to come to AZ in june. Lived in MN all my life and all i have ever talked about is getting out and trying something new. Dont get me wrong MN is a good state, we have good jobs, good health care, nice areas, but the 5-6 month winters can be long and cold.

I grew up on the WestSide of St paul and now live in Inver Grove Heights which is a suburb to St Paul. Where were you thinking of living? how much are you willing to pay for rent? whatever you do do not move to the East Side of St Paul!!!!! Its not a good place to live at all.

If you have any questions just ask and i will tell you whatever you want to know, maybe you can help me out with AZ as well.

I agree with everyone else: don't move during winter. You don't know how your vehicle will do. You probably will have to buy a lot of warmer clothes too. I personally wouldn't move ANYWHERE without a job.

Agree! Don't move yet. Stay put, save up money. You don't have the resources right now to take this risk, and as noted, people aren't often moving in January. Do whatever you can between now and later this spring to earn as much money as possible and boost your savings. And as noted, you'll save the money on winter gear and clothing. Sure, you'll need it eventually, but this way you can put it off until the next year, by which time you'll have a job and won't need to put it on credit card or burn through your savings.

Starting in April, and really escalating in May and June, people will be moving out, and there will be more people looking for new roommates.

Nothing wrong with dreaming, but take another six months or so and you'll have a much easier time and far better odds of success.

Agree. But even in March, April the weather can be brutal with sleeting snow and rain freezing. If you don't know how to drive in that it can be a problem. Pile ups of over 300 on one day can happen. Watch the weather.

When was the last time this happened?

"Pile ups of over 300 on one day" is not the same as "Over 300 separate pile ups".

Which did you mean?
