Hi all,

I'm moving to Minneapolis in September from Toronto and one thing I am worried I will miss is my trusty alternative, independent video store. I rely on this store for films that are not necessarily "arty" but lesser known and not reliably carried by "blockbuster" rental stores. I like older classics as well as foreign films, and I also have a bunch of favourite directors (Kubrick, Robert Altman, Polanski, Cronenberg, David Lynch, Bergman, Woody Allen, Chaplin, Coen Brothers <-- you like that one, I know, etc...). I tend to choose what to watch on the basis of who directed the film rather than who starred in it.

Any suggestions?

Hardly. Those directors aren't that alternative.
Try Cinema Revolution (Used to be on Nicollet, but moved to Lyndale in the 20s I think). They have a good website.

Wow. There are tons of independent video stores in Minneapolis and St.Paul. They even have shops that carry brands that are what you consider, "underground" brands, in the retail world.

Yep, as I said, I know some of the directors on that list are not what some would consider "alternative"....however, I named them because in fact it is difficult to find comprehensive collections of their work in a regular video store that caters to new releases. Of course, there are other lesser known directors and films I would like to find/browse...do you know of other stores that cater to what you would count as "alternative" film?? I will check out Cinema Revolution's website. Thank you.

Glad to hear it. Even though I have been trying to do research on Minneapolis, I still know very little about the city. I think I need to be there to discover what it has to offer. Do you have any particular neighbourhoods you would recommend I check out for such stores? Thanks!

Cheapo in Uptown has huge selection of movies including some very obscure stuff. They also sell used stuff.

See if Netflix has many of the movies that you like. If so, get an account, it is easy and convenient. I know they have some movies by most or possibly all of the directors that you listed.

Movies on 35th Street may be worth checking out. It's near the intersection of 35th St and Bloomington Ave in Minneapolis. If you want to see a movie that isn't in stock you can usually convince the owner to order it in. I've done it a couple times.
