The Mansions of Saint Paul’s Summit Avenue and a few from the surrounding area

Started out from the Cathedral of Saint Paul and took a few of the roads around it first before hitting Summit Avenue. I will share the inside of the cathedral and the State Capitol in another thread:

The mighty Mississippi:

Homes just off the river:

Back onto Summit Avenue:

LOVE this church!

James J. Hill House:
From 1882-1886 Summit avenue had Forty Six new homes built on it. In 1891, Canadian born and self made millionaire (worth 63 million in 1916), torn down the first house ever built on Summit avenue to construct a house that symbolized his success. The red sandstone mansion is Richardsonian Romanesque style, completed in 1891 by Boston architects Peabody, Stearns and Furber. 36,000 square feet and was at the time the most expensive house in Minnesota. In 1921 the house was given to the Archdiocese of St. Paul and was a school until 1978. Today it is open to the public for tours. I just missed it by ½ hour, but leave reason to bet back to Minnesota to check it out.

And back to the Cathedral of Saint Paul

Two more thread to follow, which will include downtown.

Hope you enjoyed and feel free to comment or add to my reps points!

Very nice pics. Definitely one of my favorite areas in St. Paul to just wander around.

Great Photos! Looks like you really took the time to get the character of Summit Avenue--you pointed out details that I've never noticed (as in that church) even though I've driven or biked down that street scores of times.

Thanks for posting!
