My grandparents own a condo in Ft. Myers, FL and we visit them evey year for thanksgiving. While Ft. Myers is nice, it's similar to most of Florida. The real treasure of the area is Sanibel Island. Staying on the island is pretty expensive, but it makes a good day trip (or several days) from some of the hotels in Ft. Myers. The island has a lot of intersting things, from a huge beach that stretches the entrie length of the gulf side and is known as the shelling capital of the world (literally mounds of shells in some spots) to Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge of the mainland side, where you can see exotic birds, fish, gators, ect. The refuge is also home to a huge mangrove forest that can be paddled through the narrow waterways in canoes or kyaks.
