I'm going to be moving to the Powderhorn area (a block or two south of Lake and a couple blocks east of 35w to be exact) and I've been hearing mixed opinions. Some say it's simply "not bad", others say it's total crap. My car was broken into while I was signing the lease, so I feel that my personal views are unfairly skewed. A quick search shows that I probably don't have anything to worry about, but I was just wondering if anybody had anything in particular they'd like to mention.

hmm, I'm definitely interested to hear your experiences of living there. Personally I'd prefer to look a little bit further south than that in hopes of avoiding some crime but I really don't know much about that area as far as personal experiences go. There's a possibility you'll see some hookers around, or within a block or two of your place, maybe a crackhead here and there too.

Well it depends on your experiences. I would live there, but it is kind of a crappy neighborhood, but there are definetely much worse areas. If you are used to clean subburburban type areas, this is not the case. On the other hand, if you think of a bad neighborhood as something like bad neighborhoods in Detroit or Chicago it really isn't bad. There are a lot of good deals on houses over there and it is nice because you are pretty close to Uptown, shopping and the lakes.

Right now I live a couple blocks from Lake & Lyndale, and I was fairly surprised to see that as far as crime goes, the new area isn't much worse. I compared a couple crime maps and found that within 10 blocks of my current place, there were 4 robberies, 2 rapes, and one assault (one of the rapes was apparently near the intersection by my house ). The new place had 5 robberies, a couple car break-ins, and a couple drug arrests. I was shocked to say the least; I've walked home alone late at night quite a few times and the only interesting thing that ever happens is having drunks try to talk to me outside of the Leaning Tower. I'll be sure to check back in a few months to post a trip report.

Well I've been here about 3 weeks and I can already tell this will be an interesting year. There is a group of people that like to hang out at our intersection; they claim they're Bloods and seem to be running some sort of drug/prostitution business. My roommate spoke with the guy that "runs the 30's", I'm assuming this means Lake St. through 39th. The guy told him that they've been keeping people off our porch and keeping an eye on things in general. I was skeptical at first, but I did notice people haven't been opening our gate as much as they used to. We pretty much agreed to let these guys do their thing as long as they respected the fact that we live here (keep it down, don't break stuff, etc.). Hopefully they're good on their word.

There have been two shootings within 5 blocks since we moved in, the last one being this past weekend, a gunfight of sorts that couldn't have been more than 2 blocks south of the house. Watching groups of people running for their lives past your window is a good catalyst for re-evaluating your life.

I leave my bedroom window open most of the time just to listen to the people outside. Some of the hookers sound like they're straight from an episode of South Park. You can hear their nastiness.

I'm kind of looking forward to the end of the lease

Everyone goes on and on about the Northside being the most horrible place on earth. Yes, South Mpls has a couple more sections that are 'jewels' than North Mpls but it certainly has it's scary spots!

In the 90s it was Phillips, Phillips, Phillips (south Mpls). Now that we are in the new century, we have a new area of town to excoriate!

I wouldn't move SOUTH to get away from any of it. 38th and Chicago is much worse than Lake and Chicago. If I lived in Powderhorn, it would be around Lake and over towards the actual park. You aren't going to be butchered in your sleep, buit there will be some uncomfortable moments. The new Sears Building took care of ALOT of the crime in a half-mile radius of Lake and Chicago. The market there is pretty nice. Of all the lousy areas in the city, I think this one is most on the upswing. If you want to be an Urban pioneer or are strapped for cash, go for it, seriously. If you use your "city sense", youll be OK. If you like to walk your dog at Midnight, move to Uptown.
