If we can scrape together money for an Olympic bid, then maybe the news today about a $6.2b deficit is some kind of sick joke. There is no way in hell Minnesota will host the Olympics in the foreseeable future. Zero chance.

But ... just think of all those sports stadiums we could have here! The 7 shiny new facilities we have in Stadium Village are not enough. The Dome, and Target Center, and Target Field, and the new Vikes stadium, are not enough! We need more sports stadiums!

Sure are a lot arenas/stadiums in a one mile radius of The Dome, eh.

I do think that if the olympics were held here though visitors would have a great time. We have to get transportation under control, but for two weeks I think the cities would be a great place to visit, given there would be all sorts of olympic events.

Anybody else remember how close MSP came to hosting the '96 Olympics by being a USOC finalist with Atlanta in 1988 when they eventually lost out on the "secret" ballot 65-42? MSP outspent Atlanta in their bid process by $100,000 ($350K to $250K) and I remember the prevailing attitude by most of the citizenry to be something along the lines of, "good, we probably wouldn't have beat out the other world finalists anyways". Athens, Toronto, Melbourne, Manchester, Belgrade were the other world finalists that year.

Atlanta Will Be U.S. Bid City for 1996 Olympics - Los Angeles Times

Think we actually have a chance to host the games?

Chicago budgeted $50 million for their recent bid.
The OC wanted a guarantee of $500 million "contribution" from the recent bidders.
The Chicago operating budget was $3 - 5 billion (depending on who was telling that story).
The OC wants 40,000 hotel rooms, the 7 county area has 35,000, Chicago has 90,000 and lost.

It's nice to dream though.

MPLS does not have the infrastructure, capacity or working capital to even think about hosting a World Event, let alone the Olympics. The Twin Cities should stick to the MOA, Hotdishes and the RNC

I still don't want the Olympics in Minnesota though, but that is not one of the reasons why.
Why don't you want the Olympics in Minnesota?

The Twin Cities rank as 32nd richest city in the world in terms of GDP. Ahead of Munich, Rome, Vancouver, Milan, Istanbul, Athens, Montreal, Stockholm and Barcelona, just to name a few.

Capacity? Not sure what you mean by that. Infrastructure? If you mean public transport, I agree with you.
