We are a family of 5 and currently live in Coon Rapids. When we moved here we got a good size house for the money. Now that our kids are moving up through elementary school (oldest is in 3rd grade), we are realizing that the schools aren't so great.

We're doing fairly well and are pretty thrifty which has allowed us to save over the years. We are considering moving to a better area with better schools. Eden Prairie has been recommended by co-workers, etc and it looks as though we could afford a decent house there.

One major hesitation we have would be the social change. As mentioned we are pretty thrifty and are wondering if that is frowned upon. We're also wondering about the social aspect in the schools. Are most of the 'cool' kids in the schools the ones with the most money?

Eden Prairie is still in Minnesota, and we were rather thrifty ourselves when we lived in the SE corner of Eden Prairie. I don't think you would have any issues...

From my experience with people from Eden Prairie, you may have SOME issues but you will also be able to find plenty of people that are also thrifty. I think a bigger concern would be the size of the schools-mainly the high school. Are you prepared to send your kids to a school that graduates 1200 kids/year? Just something to think about.

Eden Prairie does have great schools but there are plenty of other options to explore as well. Is Eden Prairie convenient to where you work?

Default Eden Prairie High School

Actually, the 2008 graduating class at Eden Prairie High School was under 800 kids. They do have big classes, but they are not THAT big.
Just wanted to make sure she had the correct info on that.

That does sound like a big high school. I work in Brooklyn Center, so it's probably about the same commute distance, just from the other direction. I looked at Plymouth, but it seems harder to get a decent house in my price range.

I grew up in Coon Rapids. My parents still live there. They are also "thrifty." I work in Eden Prairie. And live downtown Mpls. I have noticed over the years that people seem to spend more money in Eden Prairie. For example - The Wildfire Restaurant in the EP mall probably wouldn't make it if located in Coon Rapids. And the kids drive nicer cars here. also, you get less for your housing dollar for sure.

Look in the Mounds View school district. I don't know about housing prices but the schools are excellent and it is in the same general area you are in now and will be an easier commute than Eden Prairie.

Minnetonka Sr. High is pretty good school. If I was to have kids and decided to stay here in MN, that's where I would want my kids to go to school at.

You can always look at White Bear. A lot of thrifty kids there, and still pretty decent academically. It's almost as large as EP though. (About 650 kids per class)

I don't know - I know a lot of keeping up with the Jones type folks in Eden Prairie - a lot of folks driving luxury car brands and that kind of thing. I'm sure there are all types of people living there but that is not a suburb I'd choose if I wanted to live in an area where people are not so focused on material things. I too would consider the Moundsview school district. The Moundsview school district area is also just not so congested and getting around is easier than Eden Prairie. I've lived on both sides of town and much prefer that aspect of the 694 side vs. the 494 side.
