hi All

I am a newly divorced moving from NYC with a happy big city life to MPLS (Please dont ask me why..haha). i need to live in a place that is extremely lively, happening and provides a good downtown kind of a living. i am looking for an apartment that has all the good luxuries and preferably good views. I need ot be in a place that has young people, singles hang-outs and clubs/bars/restaurants... love nature..heard there are also riverviews, etc. any neighbourhood recommendation. rent is a not a big deal..used to pay 4k per month in NYC. so i am assuming it has to be cheap in MPLS. will own a car too. any help people. (please dont ridicule me for why i am moving to MPLS from NYC...)

I know I'm not contributing to the thread, but I gotta say your user name is clever.

I agree, your name is very clever!

I would check out the uptown area. It is very close to downtown but I think it will have more of what you are looking for in terms of young people and close to nature. There are some pretty nice apartment complex's around lake calhoun which has a nice bike bath around it, tennis courts, grills and of course the lake and beach are nice in the summer time.

Why would I criticize you for moving here from NY? I love it here....wouldn't be here if I didn't. Then again, I've never been to NY, so maybe I would love it less if I had?

Anyway, I second the Carlyle. Actually, anything anywhere downtown will meet your needs. Try looking in the North Loop, too. Good luck.

Try downtown minneapolis. Nobody cares that you want to move here from Newyork. uptown also sounds like an area you might be interested in. grand ave in stpaul is also another area that you might want to consider.

I'll be honest with you-- as someone who made that kind of move a long time ago, I was in for a shock because I didn't know what to expect. So here's what to expect, just being honest:

1. Our public transportation system isn't as extensive as NYC. So get used to driving alot more and sitting in traffic more often. We've come a long way though.
2. Our pizza isn't very good. Sorry. NYC pizza tops it all. I still love that stuff.
3. Diversity is here, but it's not like NYC where we've got a "Little" everything.
4. Certain things are more expensive than others. For instance, I can remember buying stylish quality clothes in NYC for much cheaper than here in MN.

BUT-- if you're into the young singles lifestyle, I would try living uptown-- there are tons of young single people there. Also, if price isn't a problem you can find a really nice place for half the price tag you were used to paying. With a great view as well. I will admit, our public schools are better than alot of the public schools in NYC, and the environment is much safer. We also have wonderful, lovely, green, crisp grass to lay on and walk on barefoot in the summer without having to worry about whether or not that one homeless guy's pipe is gonna stick us in the foot...

Traffic? Please, there is ALWAYS traffic in NYC. I can't count how many times I've been stuck in traffic at odd hours of the day (i.e., after 10-11 pm) or the weekend in NYC. Minneapolis traffic isn't great, but at least you know when it's going to be bad (i.e., 6:45 - 9:15 am and 3:45 - 6:15 pm) and plan for it. Also, Friday afternoon "up North" traffic in Minneapolis is nothing like Friday "Hamptons" traffic in NYC.

That said, the metro area could definitely stand to do a big overhaul of the loop and other main arteries (much like Denver did with their big T-Rex program a few years ago) to lessen traffic.

As far as where to live, I'm not sure you'll find a place more similar (keep in mind it's not very similar) to NYC than uptown.

On the upside, there's no sales tax on clothes in Minnesota
