Things have changed since 2000 me boy. I'd say the number of Latinos in the city has probably doubled since then. Also, break it down into sections and the numbers look alot different. North and South Minneapolis are both very diverse, meanwhile, NE and SW are nearly all white. Central is probably fairly diverse as well.
NE Mpls nearly "all white"? Maybe 30 years ago. You been to Nordeast lately? Drive down Central Ave NE & tell me how white that area is. The truth is there's a very large Mexican population right in the center of NE Mpls & they share the are with a lot of Somalis (They built a big mosque there) there now too, in addition to being plenty of black folks around (It's right accross the bridge from N Mpls after all). NE Mpls is vcery diverse imo.
It sort of feels like people are suggesting it's shameful to be a "white city" or "white neighborhood"? Is living in a "white neighborhood" a negative? Are we not proud of who we are & our Nordic culture? Minnesota was settled by Scandinavians, and so what? Look at the numbers Nationally & we're near the top every year for lowest crime rate, healthiest, best schools, most educated, etc etc. Those Scandinavians & their offspring (with help from other groups) made this a great city & state, what's so wrong with that?
It's just fine, if you're a native Minneswegian. But as the OP (June 2007) said, he found the experience spooky. I lived in the Maryland suburbs of Washington DC a few years, and whenever I came back to Minnesota I was struck by all the blondes I saw in the airport.
Minneapolis is a diverse City but no one of color is at Lake Harriet. Most everyone is blonde.
I know sometimes it is hard to tell whether a neighborhood that is predominantly a different race or culture is dangerous or not but I assure you that the areas around Lake Harriet are very safe. No reason to be spooked.
I walked around Harriet today and I saw quite a few people of color.
