Winona is a GREAT small city! There are two really good museums (the history center and the maritime art museum), there is an annual Shakespeare festival, a film festival in the winter (and multiple other sorts of festivals) and the universities bring in a variety of musicians and sporting events. And because of the Universities you'll find lots of other young professionals to play with.

If you like the outdoors, you can leave town and in 5 minutes hit a hiking trail. There's fishing and boating on the river. Great biking, too.

As for housing, the further northwest or southeast you go from the city center will take you away from primarily student areas. COLA in Winona is reasonable enough that you may be able to afford a small house or mobile home rather than an apartment. Because it is a college town, though, most rentals only come available in June, August, or January - if you hunt at any other time of year you will just have to make do with what is available.

In my opinion the only real downside to Winona is that because of it's geography the downtown businesses and older housing were built very closely together. But the further you go up the hill or up or down river lots are bigger.

Visit Winona, and I'll bet that you'll really like it.
