Thinking of moving to Moorhead,MN. How are race relations? (skateboarding, house)

I'm thinking about moving up to moorhead to go college at MSUM in Jan 2008 but when I looked up the city I found that it has almost no minorities. I'm a black female and I saw that the African American population was about 1%. I was wondering what race relations are like in moorhead. I have no problem being in a mostly white environment I've been in one before, but first I need to know how friendly the people are in the area. I don't care what race people are as long as they're friendly.

I live in the Maryland/dc metropolitan area and people here are very diverse. I suppose I have atypical interest for an African American person, over here I go to rock concerts, shop at hot topic, and go skateboarding and people hardly seem to notice or care. Is moorhead like that? I would hate to go there and then feel outcast or excluded. It's important to me to know if I'd be comfortable there just being myself. Also how do people feel about inter-racial dating over there? My boyfriend is white and he's thinking of transferring over there with me.

It's been a long tmie since we lived in Moohead. But back in 1963 there was no racial turmoil whatsoever in that city. Just behave yourself. People are friendly.

It just doesn't show up in % but there a plently of AA in the Fargo/Morehead Area...its a college town. NDSU,MSU,Concordia. You won't have a problem. Since your into the "grunge" scene absolutely NO problems you of all people should know this.

I agree with previous posters....you wont have any issues....the F-M area has several colleges and is a bit more diverse than maybe stats say. There has never been a history of any race problems in F-M area and the people up here are friendly I have found in my 9 years living in eastern ND/northwest MN area. There is an air force base in Grand Forks and a larger one in Minot and interracial dating/couples are found in the area more than you might think for being where we are at. Plus F-M is a large enough metro area pop wise to have a lot of influx of people from outside of the local area.

Oh one other thing....it goes without saying that winters up here are like night and day different from DC. Other than getting used to the colder wx....it is a great area I think.

I've lived in the F/M area for 11 years, Moorhead for 4 of those. You should have no problems with any sort of race issues. Also, for the type of music that you like, depending on your age, there are regular all-ages shows at the All-Star Bowl in Moorhead. Other places for all-ages are the Red Raven coffee house in downtown Fargo, and for the occasional all-ages and regular 21+ shows, the Aquarium in downtown Fargo.

Thanks for all the replies. I feel better already. I was really worried about not fitting in. As for the weather, I think that will be the hardest part for me. I never really liked cold weather. I find DC winters really cold( lived in south FL for 10 years before moving to DC) but I guess I'll just have to wear layers and layers of clothes and keep the heat turned up. I've never been in weather any colder than 20 F. It'll be hard at first but I think I can do it.

Good for you for coming up. Never experienced below 20F...boy that is hard to imagine. Yes it will take some adjustment...as our cold lasts for several months....usually our main winter sets in by mid November and ends in mid March. Of course this varies....but in general in most years you can expect the first accumulating snow by mid Nov and it staying on the ground more or less until the spring thaw which is usually mid March. Between mid December and mid February a typical daytime high would range from 5 to 25 above and lows 20 below to 5 above. It can be colder than 20 below at times nearly each winter....and it can get over 25 several times each winter with 30s a few days...but most days kind of fall in that 5 to 25 range for high temps. Windy weather is the norm much of the time....though the best days are the clear cold crisp days when the snow under your feet squeaks.

I have never heard of any races with relations. Perhaps at a picnic.
