-based on your accent. and when you corrected them and said you were minnesotan, did they say something like "minnesota, canada, same thing"

by the way, is minnesota really that similar to canada? i hear both have high asian and muslim populations in their cities, unlike most american citys which have afro-american and latinos as their dominant minorities

Every single day. Former Minnesotan living in Utah. Someone makes some sort of comment on how I talk every day out here. But, since my hometown is so close to Canada I can't say that I blame them.

Never had anyone think I was from Canada.

(little of topic) But when I moved to NE Ohio a few people asked if Minneapolis had a lot of Canadians since it was so close to Canada. I then told them that NE ohio was closer to Canada than Minneapolis, which they found hard to believe until I showed them on a map.

Thumbs up Minnesota/Canada

I grew up in Minnesota but left when I was 22. When I go home and am around family, I always switch to the 'hurly burly' talk of Minnesotans ("do you want to come with?" Kommen Sie mit? "Komma med?"). Lots of ups and downs and a bit like a Swedish comedian making fun of accents (or at least that's how my husband, not a Minnesotan, thinks we sound). Minnesotans Swedish/German/Norwegian ancestry shows (look in a Minnesota phonebook at the last names and you'll be amazed).

I lived in Ottawa, Canada for 4 years as an adult. Canadians in that neck of the woods have a rounder sound to their words. You hear it especially in "house, about, around". You hear a hint of the British background in their accents. They always knew that I was not one of them. I can normally tell when it is an Ontario-Canadian when I meet one.

Canadians could be called "Canadan-nice". They are some of the friendliest people that I have met, always eager to help but allowing you your space. I would find it a great compliment to be compared to Canadians.

Being very familiar with both MN and Canada, I agree with your assessment 100%.

Here's a handy litmus test I use to tell where someone is from:

MN = oat and aboat
Rest of US = out and about
Canada = oot and aboot

I tend to have the more Canadian pronunciation of out and about, as a coworker reminds me every time I say about by nearly falling over laughing.

Spent a LOT of time in BC (Vancouver and in the Islands) and there are definitely some similiarities. Not just in the language but also in the attitude and in how people are in general. Fewer dweebs on average.

A few times, but generally they spend their time making fun of me for living in Fargo...that damn movie! I guess you can't complain when they're attacking the white middle-class though...oh well!

In talking with clients nationwide, I get asked "Are you from Canada?" about once a month or so. Usually from Californians.
