Two thumbs down. I think they are harder on the eyes of oncoming drivers (they're certainly harder for ME to look at), and they make my wife's eyes hurt.

They blind me!!! I have had near collisions due to that fact.
They should be banned until they can get the technology right.

Properly aligned HID headlights are designed to rake the road without shining above the horizon level. But if you have a load of groceries or a sack of cement in your trunk, the rear end of your car will droop, causing your headlights to shine right into oncoming traffic.

My partner has a new Scion with HID lights - they really work!

All new cars equipped with HID headlights in the US are required by law to have auto adjusting mechanisms. For instance, on my Audi, they wiggle up and down and find the "center point" every time I turn the car on. The suspension has two arms (front and rear) that connect from the body to the control arms and detect and report the car angle to the headlights. So supposedly if you have a load of groceries in the back of your car, the lights should auto adjust downward a little to compensate.

I love HID's. However, I've noticed the fake ones purchased at Pep Boys, Autozone, etc that alot of guys put on their Accords, Civic's, late 90's/early 00 mustangs, etc are a nuisance.

Yeah, many of the lights annoying people could be fake HID's put in cars without auto leveling headlights which is a requirement with real HID lights.

Assuming everything functions properly (and they aren't the imitation ones purchased at a shop), this still wouldn't take into account changing inclines going up/down hills (and even if it does, there would still be some lag time and the perfect HID angle going up a hill could be the exact line of sight of the opposing traffic), which is where I tend to notice the HID's the most (and where there is probably more potential for danger if conditions are bad, etc.).

I think they could stand to be improved upon- I actually hate driving through the Wayzata/Lake Minnetonka area on Hwys 12 or 7 at night specifically because of all the HID-equipped luxury sedans.
