Traffic congestion to/from Elk River at rush hour is a nightmare. And getting to Elk River on Friday holiday weekend is next to impossible.

On the plus side, Elk River now has commuter rail to Minneapolis, which is a real plus (at least for those who are able to work in or near downtown Minneapolis).

I like Coon Rapids but I'm more into family activities than bars and restaurants. It has a huge variety of housing, lots of kid friendly neighborhoods and seems to be pretty safe.

It has a light rail stop near the shopping area which has pretty much every chain store you could possibly need.

During Rush hour, yes, but recently in the past 2 months I have been to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids a couple times and from St. Cloud there has been like no traffic anywhere, Elk River seems like a very nice town. A little to small for my tastes though.
