Pawlenty's drawl takes Minnesotans by surprise | Minnesota Public Radio News

I listened to the audio and it sorta freaked me out. What is he thinking?

Pawlenty's trying to be more "real American" and "conservative" by sounding Southern. Ridiculous.

Yep.

He should go around and use the accent of the state he is speaking at.

Which in the case of Iowa would mean no accent in almost every corner of the state.

Totally bizarre.

I think Central and Southern Iowans have a slight drawl. Much like the accent Pawlenty attempted...but with much less syrup.

Actually, central and southern Iowa (along with extreme northern Misery, eastern Nebraska, western Illinois) are the only areas where General American is spoken. That's the only area considered of the country considered to be devoid of any regional accent, and the reason why it's a hotbed for newscasters trying to lose their own regional accents.

I've heard Minnesotans make the claim about "slight drawl" in those areas many times before and the only explanation I can come up with is that we are so accustomed to hearing North Central American English that we perceive Iowans to have a "drawl" or "twang", neither of which are technically accurate. Iowans don't sound anything remotely close to what Pawlenty had going on during his speech.

Any Iowan would instantly perceive Pawlenty as having something like an Ohio Valley or Arkansas accent as it would sound alien to them.

The areas of the state with perceptible accents are actually along the Minnesota and Wisconsin borders.

I heard his drawl and was a bit disgusted. Who does T-Paw think he is? It's really a pity that politicians can't be "real".

I used to have a modicum of respect for Mr. Pawlenty, until he came out with that disastrous "throw a 9-iron through the windows of gov't" sound bite - while he was still a sitting Governor with 6+ years in office! How irresponsible and craven a pol can you be, Tim? Can you imagine how pissed he would have been if we'd taken him up on his offer and 9-ironed the Governor's mansion?

It's not going to do him any good anyway, no way will he get elected President.

I am not a big fan of Tim Pawlenty.

If I happen to be a Minnesotan and I hear my former governor not taking pride in his home state, I would be insulted.

I think Pawlenty is trying to appeal to conservative and evangelical red states by using the drawl to click with people there.

Many states often view Minnesota as a somewhat liberal blue state along with HI, CA, OR, WA, WI, IL, and the rest of Northeastern states so people might think Pawlenty is a different type of conservative politician.

IMHO, Pawlenty stands no chance due to his lack of name recognition but you never know what will happen in politics these days.
