There are no close Canadian cities you can drive to from Minnesota. Winnepeg, the closest major city is like 15 hours away.
Ha Ha ha, you do know where Winnipeg and Canada are don't you? Anywhere in Minnesota is within no more than 9 hours away from Winnipeg....Indianapolis, IN is about 15 hours from Winnipeg, sometimes some people get Indianapolis and Minneapolis confused (they both have "apolis" at the end), maybe that's what you've done.

You call 9 hours close?

Well, I just traveled to Minnesota this past week (flew into Minneapolis) to see my gf's fam in International Falls. The drive to Falls is not bad at all, and can be done in less than 5 hours if you don't need to stop (usually you need to refuel somewhere). You can go through Duluth or cut through Cloquet to shave a few minutes off.

I also went through the border to Fort Frances. It's actually a nice little town, and their river walk area is beautiful at night when it is all lit up, especially viewed from across the river in International Falls. Maybe not worth a trip in itself, but a quaint little town nonetheless. Don't forget the International Falls area is also worth visiting for Voyageurs National Park.

I have friends from Mpls that take an annual fishing trip there.

Now that I'm in Texas I go a fair amount for business (oil). But would vacation in Montreal in a heartbeat.

Yeah fishing trips, i would say are a time when a lot of Minnesotans travel to Canada.

Traveling to Canada for the purpose of shopping, nightlife, food or anything else? No.

You are leaving out a lot of Minnesotans up in the northwest part of the state who do travel to Winnipeg via 29 and 75 for daytrips to the zoo and to the Forks shopping/river area. Not to mention the Children's museum and Assinboine Park. Travel for shopping....now that is pretty rare as with the dollar where it is at it combined with PST and GST it wouldnt be worth it.

How many Manitobans travel to Grand Forks and Fargo for shopping....a whole lot. Busloads stop by the superTarget in Grand Forks....everyone one from either Brandon or Winnipeg.

Now for someone down closer to the cities it would make it much rarer to go north as you got the zoo, museums, etc right there. It is 150 miles for me to go to Winnipeg versus 300 to go to Minneapolis.
