Me and my friends are looking for a fun low budget place to go within an 6-8 hour drive of Southeastern MN. We would be up for anything nature-ish, but also would like to find some people to party with. Would rather go any direction that's not East. Any suggestions?

Naniboujou Lodge near Grand Marais is really cool, but may be a little longer than 6 to 8 hour drive (depends how fast you drive).

Also, you can check out Niagara Cave near Harmony Mn.

Or the Split Rock Light House and Gooseberry Falls on the north shore of Lake Superior.

Ely MN is a cool little town to party in and lots of wildlife, fishing, and nature there too.

Duluth would seem like a good choice as you have a decent sized historic and cool looking city to party in along with several nearby state parks where your nature craving can be fed.

Out of curiosity, why don't you want to go east? Do you have an outstanding warrant in the state of Wisconsin or something?

there's not much going west until the black hills, which is probably 10 hours from eastern MN. You could go to Sioux Falls or assorted state parks in eastern South Dakota or Western MN, but you'll find ones 10 times better EAST, in Wisconsin. There's really no good reason to visit eastern SD or western MN unless you live there.

Black Hills/Sturgis is worth the trip though, especially if you like Motorcycles and bars, during a certain week of the year that's coming up in 11 days.

The 71st Anniversary Sturgis Rally 2011. Schedules, Lodging, Merchandise, 100,000+ Sturgis Rally pictures and more....

St. Louis, MO? There is a lot to do there and the drive down, once you get past Cedar Rapids, IA is very pretty, especially in the fall.

Otherwise, how about Chicago?

Neither are nature orientated but both great trips to take.

One of my friends is from Chicago, I am from Cleveland, and I would like to see some different landscapes than the typical flat midwest that I'm used to. Just want to go somewhere that's different from the norm. I've been to Duluth/the North Shore, and it is pretty cool. Someone mentioned Ely, I looked it up and it seems interesting. How close is that to the Boundary Waters?

Porkies or other locations in the U.P. The hiking there is nice, and there's some elevation. There are also waterfalls around. Plus, there might be some "partying" at the ski resorts or maybe in Hurley.

Kansas city - experience a bit of the southern blues and BBQ culture. They have a great hipster/coffee shop scene as well.

Ozarks - check out the small mountains and beautiful lakes

Iowa city - arguably the prettiest college town in the big ten

Door county, wi

Isle royal n.p., mi- check out all the moose!

Madeline island

St louis- see a cardinals game and see the arch. Go on a brewery tour as well

Just a few thoughts that came to mind
