This is a question for people that have either lived in both states or spent significant time in both states. Are Minnesota Mosquitoes and Horse Flies worse than Maine Mosquitoes and Black Flies, not as bad, or about the same? I've experienced many summers of Minnesota mosquitoes and horse flies so any comparison will be understood.

In Northern Minnesota, deer flies (sometimes called horse flies) are an annoyance. I find if I wear a baseball cap when working outdoors, I'm left alone.

Minnesota Horseflies are as big as hummingbirds and can chew through shoe leather to get at you. Black flies aren't any bigger than house flies, but bite as bad as the horseflies, and travel in squadrons.

Mosquitoes? Their motto is, "drill baby drill". I hear they've signed a marketing deal with Black & Decker.

While camping in the woods of the Michigan UP, we found that drinking tequila would effectively deter the ravenous black flies from bothering us at all.

Scouts honor, they really would not come near us. We discovered the repellent quite by circumstance the night we got there. It made for an interesting breakfast the next day.
