Vikings stadium deal to be announced Thursday | StarTribune.com
Yes! The Vikings are staying downtown. Sorry tailgaters, looks like you'll have to pack up your cases of Old Milwaukee, shave your sideburns above the earline, move to Wisconsin, and convert to Packer fans. I on the other hand am loving this news!

I imagine Hubert's is kinda happy, those construction workers can drink a lot of beer.

I think the biggest obstacle will be the 7, vote-posturing, council members but I suspect they will be out of a job by the time the stadium opens and they won't be invited to the ground-breaking ceremonies this summer.

I believe the legislature will simply avoid their pandering opinion by performing some shifty slight of hand and avoid a Mpls approval all together.

While the seating capacity (65,000) is being announced at just a bit over the Metrodome's current listed capacity of 64,111, that is still more than Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium of 63,000. LOS reportedly added another 5,000 for their Super Bowl which consisted mostly of SRO tickets. I'm guessing a secret handshake between Gov Dayton and NFL Commish Goodell has already occurred on this matter.

Other details emerging..

square footage increases by almost double (80%) from 900,000 to 1.6 Million sq ft.
75% of the new stadium can be "built" before starting work at the MD site
5th St will be the only street rerouted/moved

It looks as though the proposed Viking's stadium would be expandable to 72,000 seats for special events. The Vikings would also have exclusive rights (for 5 years) to bring an MLS team to the stadium. The team could also use it for ten non-football events a year without paying additional rent.

I still think they should put a 110,000 seats in the new stadium. Biggest and best in the league.

As I understand it, the Vikings have the option, and would bear the cost of upgrading to a retractable roof. I'm guessing this depends mostly on Ziggy agreeing to terms with the MLS on a future expansion team or purchase/relocation.

Either way, I was surprised to learn that the incremental cost is only $25-30M. I can't imagine it would dramatically affect operating costs. If they're already spending this much, why not work out a deal to make this happen? A lot is said about the cold. But let's not forget that a lot of those game dates in September and October can be picture perfect. It would be a lot easier for STH to stomach regular season prices for August preseason games

Hopefully Ziggy is serious about the MLS and not just throwing out pie in the sky. Hopefully, the MLS considers MSP a worthwhile market and is willing to accept another NFL venue as opposed to a smaller soccer specific stadium. There's no way an MLS team will play in a fixed roof stadium in Minneapolis. The same can be said for future World Cup, lacrosse, etc.

That number for a retractable roof seems a bit light for anything much more than a hole in the top like the old Dallas Stadium, but at least it sounds like they will be thinking of making the stadium retractable-ready just in case.

I would hope that the MLS franchise comes to fruition and I would think it could be supported, but.... if they were to get an MLS team, we would be one of only 3 other cities/metros to have the 5 majors and a WNBA team, NY, Baltimore/DC and Chicago being the others.
