Crime low, schools good, jobs, depends on what you do, housing OUTRAGEOUS!!!! Alexandria is a lake community and property costs are out of reach for most people, LOTS going for 350,000+++++, no building, just the land.

actually pretty affordable in town yes the lakes like anywhere [cut]...generally a very nice place, quick access since 94 runs right by it.

I was disappointed in Alexandria.

Nearby Fergus Falls is a much nicer, quieter town.

Smile Alexandria

Alex is awesome! Beautiful small town feel with all the amenities of a larger town. Off of 94 but no major busy roads going through alex. Really nice older homes in town, very reasonable in price. Lake homes are expensive no matter where you go! Lots of nice lakes, resorts and beaches. Low crime rate-almost none! A few famous people visit Alex occasionally. The summer months draw tourists because of all of the lakes and resorts. Downtown is great, lots of unique shops on Broadway (main street). They even have a small museum. If you go, make sure to drive to the end of Boadway to see "Big Ole" , he's been there for many years, although he used to stand on a big concrete pedestal in the middle of the street!

Sounds nice! Any pictures? We don't want to be in a flood zone nor a tornado alley. Good area?

Nice town, I have family there. They have a Target and a Walmart and a Perkins so it's not like you won't have some distractions. There is a Vo-Tech. It is a resort area with all the lakes. The crime is very low, in fact, you can put your lawn chairs out the night before for any parade and they won't be taken. As far as floods, not really in this area. Tornadoes happen anywhere in the state but you usually get a warning.

Thanks for the response. No flood in that area? Are there areas to stay away from? How often do you get tornadoes?

Flooding in MN is primarily in the river valley areas. The Red River (MN/ND border) in the spring because the river flows north and the northern part doesn't thaw as fast as the southern part. The Minnesota and the Mississippi. None are really a problem for the Alex area. BTW, everyone up there calls it Alex (pronounced Alec). A few tornadoes but nothing out of the ordinary, primarily in the spring an summer. If you live in an area with tornadoes now, you'll know the signs. I don't think there are any areas in the town to avoid, it is basically a small town that has started to sprawl a bit. I think there is even a small ski area to the west of town. Winter will be your big problem up there as the snow really does blow. Alex is the point where the highway patrol shuts down I-94 to travel west. Should be ok in town though.

Thanks for all your help. Is there an area in MN where the snow is less in the winter? With a small town and low crime?
