Why is it raining in December? Global warming?

Here in Michigan, this seems to be the weather pattern that we've been experiencing the past several years too; relatively warm and rainy into December but then it turns bitter cold and we get hammered with snow in January, February, and March.

It's been pouring all day here too, and the current temp is 45 degrees, with a projected high in the mid-50s for tomorrow and more rain. Personally, I'll take this over snow any day. I have read that one inch of rain would equal roughly a foot of snow, so we would have inches on the ground by now. At least we don't have to shovel rain!

My grass is getting green

It isn't unheard of to have temps in the 40's in December. This has nothing to do with global warming, which will actually make our temps colder but that is beside the point.

We had that last year here to, except for the mild rainy December part, it just snowed, snowed, bitter cold and than snowed some more in the spring. Noting but snow and cold from late November till April. It was pretty awful. I for one am glad to see the rain.

Well...it is raining in December because there is precipitation and clouds forming in our region this time of year but the temperature is still exceeding 32F, thus the precipitation is not cold enough to freeze and form snow. That would answer your question... ;-)

As far as the dubious claim of "global warming", it is only extremist political agendas that try to suggest that one year of warmer than what our memory says is "normal" is "global warming" - and we should enact all sorts of draconian government regulation to regulate this supposedly human activity. Even if true, it could be better addressed by a true free market as opposed to said government regulation that pretty much always fails to do what it is supposed to do.

Okay...let the sparks fly...

I have golfed, in shorts, in MN in December. It was 55 degrees on New Years Eve 1999/2000.

No snow on the ground in Cleveland and it'll touch 60 degrees today -- something is going on!
