Hi there, I have read the other thread about St. Cloud, but would like more information. My husband is looking at applying for a position at SCSU, and after reading the other thread, he is thinking that maybe St. Cloud isn't the place for us, especially since we have two little ones who aren't in school yet, but the oldest will be in kindergarten in couple years. We are currently in Houston, TX so...St. Cloud is definitely a very small town compared to where we are, and Houston has a lot to offer as far as kids' activities go. I have read that there are lots of dining and shopping, but what are the things that are of interest to a stay at home mom with two little ones (3 and 1) in St. Cloud? Also...if it makes any difference, we are Asian and from our research, Asians are the minority there.

Thanks!
J

jkn2006 - Our family lived in St. Cloud for almost 4 years and we left only because my husband was offered a great job opportunity. Two years later everyone still misses it. We lived in the bedroom community of Sartell and found the schools to be excellent (including their Pre-K program). We lived in a subdivision called "The Wilds" which is in the $300,000 to $750,000 range and loved the neighborhood (swim/tennis/bike paths/playground) and overall very friendly and safe. There were several Asian families that lived there and a bi-racial family (he was Korean & she was caucasion) as well. Our best friends in the neighborhood happened to be a Chinese family that had kids our same ages. They have sinced moved to the Minneapolis area. I can safely say that our attitude reflected that of the whole neighborhood (and I would venture to say the community on the whole). People were truly appreciated for their different cultures and not merely tolerated. You can PM me if you would like more info. Sartell, however, is on the other side of town from SCSU. There are plenty of new housing developments on that end of town and living near the campus would allow easy access to I94 for a quick ride (less than an hour) to Minneapolis/St. Paul if you're missing city life. Also, I know that there is a group of mom's that have preschool children that meet for playgroup and outings. If you're interested I'll check into that contact info for you.

BTW - The St. Cloud area is made up of St. Cloud proper, Waite Park, Sartell, and Sauk Rapids. Be sure to look into these other towns when doing your research. Best of luck to you...

I agree with the previous poster. The "suburbs" of St. Cloud are great. With SCSU as well as two private colleges in the ares St. John's University/College of St. Benedict you are going to find a pretty diverse population around the area. It is also a very educated area and because of that you don't typically run into a lot of the same race issues you might in a less educated area. Sartell is a very pretty area, great schools, nice hometown feel. It is really worth a look. I think your husband will find that the quality of the students he teaches is better too.

Another plus to St. Cloud, it is only an hour away from Minneapolis/St. Paul which expands your cultural opportunities as well.
