Does anyone have an opinion on the city of Bemidji? I lived there for a couple years, and just see it as a small college town.

Small is one of the great reasons its such a great town. The area is full of lakes, woods, water and trees. There is plenty of activity to do in all seasons, including walking, biking, winter and summer. The college setting there is so beautiful, streatched out along the lake, nesteled in the trees, and close to the downtown area easily within walking distance.

Its not just a college town, in fact its known for many many more reasons than just that.

God's country. Best place I've ever been. We hope to retire there soon. It is heaven for an active outdoorsman like me.

Bemidji is a beautiful area. It's sad that they lost so many pine trees in the past several years though. I just love it up there.

What caused the loss of the pine trees. I did not notice a decline on my last visit (2011) but it had been a long time since I was last there.

There was some fungus or something that killed off a lot of the pine trees. My family is from there originally and we still have land up there. The property we owned was about 500 acres of pine trees 70 years ago. Over the years some of that was sold off for other developments but we still own about 250 acres. About 50 acres was open and farmed for many years but about 30 years ago was planted with a variety of spruce and other pines. The rest of the land was mostly Jack Pines and all of those are gone now. It is really sad. Even along the highways it used to be like driving through a tunnel of pine trees and most of those are gone. It looks a lot more like NW MN now, flat and open.

I think a lot of it has to do with the long growing time of pine trees as opposed to other trees. Some of the places that were full of pine trees a hundred or two hundred years ago could have had some of that land taken over by other types of trees or vegetation
