We are considering a move from western KY to Bemidji. Will be looking for a house with at least 5 acres so I can work with my dog (lab), have a garden, etc. Most of the properties we have seen on real estate web sites are either in town, small city lots, or lake lots. Wondering if there are very many Properties available with these specifications. Also curious how easily a southerner can integrate into a mid west community and not feel like an outsider. We are looking at smaller towns with cooler climate and good hunting/fishing opportunities. We have two boys that will be going to college in a couple years

Give me a DM and I will give you a real estate site that has plenty of what you are looking for. I have looked at many homes outside of Bemidji with 5-12 acres. Also Golfgal is chock full of knowledge about that area. Good luck.

I'd think that finding land would not be a problem. Sounds like you want a place out in the country more or less, well there is plenty of country around them parts.

You will have lots of good choices from more heavily wooded areas to light cover, to more open spaces.

The city is friendly and most of the folks are willing to help out if needed. Be prepared for the winters as they can be cold, as you look for cooler climates this is one of them. The summers are wonderful as the fall time comes around there are so many wooded areas to walk in with the falling leaves, and hunting season in the fall also.

The area is real good for bird hunting as well as deer hunting/as well as wintertime sports and fun outdoor activities.

Just south of town in the Paul Bunyan State Forest know to locals as the Gullies, is a wonderful place for hiking camping and bringing your dogs, there are many lakes there for fishing and camping with several flowing wells with the best water, so good tasting.

There are alot of horses and riders in the area. The area lakes are popular for swimming and fishing, many use the lakes in winter for ice fishing as is very popular to do.

Yes we would want to be out in the country but close enough to town to enjoy it's conveniences. Our home in western Ky is on 36 acres and we have a 2 1/2 acre pond that we built and stocked. We came to Mill Lacs a couple yrs ago and really enjoyed walleye fishing. I went to a grad program at UND so I know about the cold. I can tolerate 0 or below much better than 100. We spend as much time as possible fishing and deer hunting but really love waterfowl hunting. I have a Lab that is trained for hunting and want enough room on our property to work with him. We are considering properties and jobs in the Fargo area as well, but I dont see a lot of properties with 5-10 acres available. The Bemidji area seems to have lots of outdoor actives with more trees than eastern ND.

Yes there are more trees than in the eastern ND.

The area is real good for water bird hunting due to the many remote back lakes and wetland areas are many.
You will have enjoyable times with the dogs hunting.

Good to know you are prepared for 0 or below, yes there will be cold, so you know that. There will be times when it will be around -20 to -30 below or better.

Bemidji is a good town in Northern MN., the people are friendly, the campus is along the lake and absolutely beautiful, with an old trail right along the waters edge. The town has alot of history, with logging and hardwork as its back. There are several pulp mills in the area.

DM sent Welkins. If you go for a visit I recommend the Hampton Inn on the shore of lake Bemidji.

Thanks for the Info. I think we will go up for a visit and check things out. Look at job opportunities, churches, properties and maybe try a little fishing while there. We still have a while before we are planning to move.

I agree-beautiful hotel, lovely setting. We have stayed there a couple times.

I have to agree about the cold in Bemidji. I've been there when the air temp was -45 degrees. That is a different kind of cold, but, it really isn't any different than 110 degrees in the south, you just stay inside or dress appropriately and are smart about what you do outside.

There are all sorts of places for rent in and around the Bemidji area that would suit your needs. Check out the local newspaper The Bemidji Pioneer, or Craigs list Bemidji. I live just north of Bemidji (15 or so miles) on five acres, with five lakes within a few miles of me.

We most likely would look for a place to buy. About 2,000-2500 ft with 5-10 acres. Need enough room to have a garden and enough room to train my retriever. Right now our place in Ky has 36 acres so we are used to having a little elbow rm. Haven't looked real hard at job opportunities for my profession but don't anticipate too much trouble finding a job.
