Duluth. I remember driving up there after my first visit to the Twin Cities. The city itself wasn't that impressive, but that setting on Lake Superior is really something. It was in late September and the air was already crisp. I only spent one day there before continuing on up the lake shore, but it was pretty nice. Still can't get over a fresh water lake that massive.

I chose International Falls because I haven't spent any significant time in any of the other options beyond a few visits to Duluth, Grand Rapids, and Bemidji.

I would probably choose Stillwater if it was on the list, but it's still pretty close to the metro. I can see Stillwater becoming as integrated into Minneapolis-Saint Paul as Wayzata is someday. Wayzata and Stillwater's quaint downtowns kind of reflect each other.

Duluth is what I chose. I first went up there last September when the leaves were at their peak. It was breathtaking. I think the town is gorgeous too. I love that they build on the hills because it reminds me of Rapid City, SD where I grew up. I felt at home a little.

The "Freshwater Ocean." Largest freshwater lake on the planet. Hopefully the taconite pollution up there hasn't contaminated the beautiful lake. I heard they've grown by leaps to keep Superior cleaner. They have some of the best smoked Trout on the planet north of Duluth. If I remember it was just before you got to Two Harbors. When I was a kid and we went up there my dad would always get some.

I'd just have to choose Swan River over them all. Sorry.

For me, it was a hard choice between Duluth (which I love) and Ortonville (which is where my Dad grew up, and where my only living grandparents lived when I was a kid).

I choose Ortonville. It's a nice town on Big Stone Lake, it has a really cool but (sadly) largely forgotten city park in the center which was fun to explore, it has the Corn Festival every year (do they still use the steam tractor to cook corn, I wonder?), it's the point at which MN Highway 7 and US Highway 12 meet if you follow them west far enough, it's at the headwaters of the Minnesota River, and it's the home of Paul Bunyan's Anchor (smaller in scale than I thought it would be, but I sure can't life it!).

Lake City! I've only lived here a week now, but I can not imagine ever leaving...Off the list I would have to say Detroit Lakes.
