I wanted to ask the experts of the north woods their opinion on some of the newer options for Mosquito repellent. I was bitten so often growing up that I don't even get the bumps or itch anymore. My wife however got eaten alive last summer when I took her to my old stomping grounds at Wolf Lake.
Are the new products more effective than the old "OFF" spray or any of the others with deet. I keep seeing the commercials for the OFF clip-ons and Thermocell products.
Do these new inovations work better without having to spray yourself and do they work with a slight wind?

We do think the Thermocell helps and use it often but it's no good unless you're in one place and it's not better than DEET.

I like Picaridin products as well but when I'm going camping it's DEET based products. IMO nothing is as strong as that.

Deet is good. You can also get permetherin, which you spray on your clothes and it lasts for a couple weeks. My wife used that in Africa and said it works well. You can find it at scheels, cabelas, etc.

I use these two big swatters on the end of my forearms. 100% reliable. If that fails, DEET works.

They did a study on those repellant products and they don't work. The only thing that works for me is deet but I hate putting that stuff on my skin so I stay indoors mostly. Hate that too cause I love the outdoors. Oh well, what can you do. I am a mosquito haven if I go outside. They flock me like bees to honey. LOL

We've tried a lot of different things while we're camping, or just working out in the yard ( live in a rural area, camp even farther north). The clip on things are a joke, citronella torches only work if you are sitting right next to them, they make a wrist band now that works for about tweny minutes, but if it's hot enough to sweat, then it will last even less time. Deep Woods Off, all the way. At eight bucks for a large can at my local store, I think they're aware that it's the only brand that really works. A close second is Repel, but for some reason the smell is ten times worse.

edit: I've heard lots of good things about Avon's Skin So Soft repellent, but I've haven't tried it yet.

Not a portable device if that's what you are looking for but the Mosquito Magnet definitely does work. We live in a low area that tends to stay wet during spring and early summer. Have had the same one for going on 10 years now and we rarely see a mosquito and never have to spray after it has a chance to wipe out the local population through the first few weeks or so of skeeter season. Ours is rated for 3/4 acre but it easily controls twice that.

Thanks for the info, the Mosquito Magnet looks good but quite pricey. If the skeeters are out in force though it would be worth the $$.
When out on the lakes I guess we will have to stick with the old DEET products.

I'm suprised there are no Thermacell users. They always promote them on the hunting shows.
