According to this map, they are--Hutchinson especially. Anyone familiar with those places and can give some insight?

Hutchinson looks clear on the map to me also...

Edit: Nevermind. Hutchinson lit up when I clicked "Racist" at the top. The default is "Homophobic".

It sounds like a few tweets in a county with low twitter use could really make an area stick out.

For example, Orange County, California has the highest absolute number of tweets mentioning many of the slurs, but because of its significant overall Twitter activity, such hateful tweets are less prominent and therefore do not appear as prominently on our map.

floatingsheep: FAQ: The Geography of Hate
McLeod County (Hutchinson) has 36,651 people.

Becker County (Detroit Lakes) has 32,504 people.

Both are rural and probably have low twitter use. I saw a MN Gay Rights FB page post that the Detroit Lakes hot spot consisted of 16 messages, but have not verified that data myself yet. One heated twitter argument over gay marriage could cause that, but not make the city a "hotbed" of hate.

OK, that is a sensible explanation. BUT how skeptical should I be that there might be more homophobes in Hutchinson than, say, St Paul. We know that the marriage amendment was championed from out there somewhere in Tea Partyland. Somewhere a candidate can rant about gays and get cheers. Is it Hutchinson? I don't know. But I am 100 percent certain that I could find political rallies where "defense of marriage" gets cheers from the crowd. The news says that Democrats who voted for same sex marriage are being targeted for defeat. And gays are rallying to fund their defense of their seat (big surprise)

Who knows if the racial or homophobic slurs in those tweets were actually used in a racial or homophobic way, words like "Niqqa" and "Fagg0t" have pretty much lost their meaning and arent usually used in a racist or homophobic way.
Just look up "Louis CK fagg0t" on youtube.

I guess whoever analyzes the tweets knows. But I seriously doubt gays or blacks have signed an all clear for those terms. If I heard a straight or white person using either, I'd strongly suspect it isn't being used "in a good way".

Hutchinson was marked as racist rather than homophobic. I would guess that some of the Hutchinson racism tweets were former Hutchinson Technology employees venting about their jobs being outsourced to Asia, but that is just a random guess. I wish they published the tweet list.

And from how many different users? 16 tweets could be one person. Sounds to me like the people who put this together have no understanding of statistical analysis.
