Hey, those squealing in pain at the gas prices must be enjoying the downward trend. Maybe sometime this month it will reach something a big more moderate. I think it is 50 cents a gallon less than a couple weeks ago.

While they play up the connection to the Blue Line (and why not?), I really think this is more of an experiment to see how suburban/exurban riders approach an upgraded, "high frequency" transit line. The connection to the mall will be nice (I suppose it provides a car-free way to get to the airport?). But if you're going downtown, the future Orange Line will service pretty much the exact same area (south metro, through many of the same cities, just on 35W instead of Cedar), and it won't require any transfers.

Minnpost says there's debate on a fare increase to offset the increases in Metro Transit costs. Some say this is exactly the WRONG moment for that. I say it is an obvious signal to begin strategically to develop immunity to some of those cost increases. Price of diesel is up? Why burn such a dirty fuel anyway? Every time a bus reaches need for replacement, make sure the new one isn't dependent on petroleum speculation. Nothing can be changed overnight, but business is always planning for cost control. Mass transit needs to steer toward efficiency in a foreseeable future. Even China with the mountains of money it has is pushing new technology to insure its pollution problems aren't permanent.

Keep in mind that there already are heavily-used express buses serving the south suburbs that run to the downtowns during rush hour. Commuters currently use those and will likely continue to do so. There would be little point for them to use the Red Line (or Orange Line, for that matter).

Do you have the link for that? I check MinnPost daily and didn't see anything about that. Only the Streets.mn article that speculated what it would be like to raise fares. Unless I missed it?

Metro Transit is transitioning their fleet to hybrids and I thought I heard they thought of using natural gas? The hybrids (especially the new #10 they have been showing off for a while) are pretty quiet and aren't spewing huge amounts of fumes like some of their older stock.

The Orange Line will no doubt replace at least one of those express bus services. It will also improve upon it by connecting southern suburbs together and to DT Minneapolis at fairly high frequencies throughout much of the day. Right now express buses are largely limited to rush hour.

Cut transit fares to 25 cents | MinnPost

It may not look like an article on a fare increase, but the increase is contained in the discussion.

For many suburban locations, Rapid Bus Transit is a good immediate option, ESPECIALLY if the buses used don't burn diesel. There's no question that petroleum spectators are turning the petroleum markets into something like a rodeo. You know, with gasoline consumption sliding, there's talk of requiring more ethanol in the mix to save ethanol plants. Why not just make all new buses ethanol burners. We can create a market right here for Minnesota co-ops that make it!!! Going from diesel to ethanol sounds to me like a huge win in many ways. I wish all the school buses could be converted for the sake of the kids.

Sorry, I meant that riders who take the express buses that go up Cedar now (i.e. 477, 472, etc) would not have a reason to take the Orange Line. I don't see them doing away with those anytime soon. But yes, I could see the Orange Line replacing something like the 460 (which runs up 35W) at some point.

I'd like to know if there are express buses like the 94 line that feed along existing freeways into town. Seems like Metro Transit could start such lines right now, but then they could have thought of that years ago. I would have no reason till now to check the system map.

They did and do.
