Hello,

We are looking at either wife working at St. cloud Hospital or St. joseph Hospital. I have read many of the posts on here about the two and see that everyone has their own thoughts about the 2 area's and I love that. I just need to get some more info so we can make a final decision.

Here is what we are looking for. First and formost is schools(academics, safety) are very important. Next would be crime, I mean we expect that there is going to be crime we just don't want to be overrun with it, also would be nice to walk down the street or to the park and not have to always be looking over our shoulders. Next would be the cost of renting a house as we do not want to buy right away. We have 2 children 11 and 8, we do not go out and party all the time so night life is not that big of a deal. We like to go out and eat, sporting events(football, baseball, hockey) a few times a year. We like to go shopping, ride bikes, skate(blading, ice) golf, and of course hunting and fishing.

We are from Pennsylvania and not worried about the weather that much. We did interview at the mayo clinic in rochester(boy was that a joke), and are now looking in the St. cloud area or St. paul area. we will be coming up there again in the next few weeks to interview in both places as initial interviews via the phone have went well and there is interest by both hospitals. We are hopefull all goes well and we can call Minnesota home.

Thank you in advance for any and all info and replies that you can give us.

What was the 'joke' about the Mayo clinic??

There are plenty of areas in the twin cities and St. Cloud that meet your needs. Are you looking at the Maplewood campus of St. Joe's? If so, look in Mahtomedi or Stillwater. Both have great schools, great kid stuff, etc. Mahtomedi is a bit spendy so it would depend on your price range. With the slow market these days finding a house to rent should be fairly easy.

St. Cloud is a nice area too. Sartell is considered the 'best' area to live in the St. Cloud area but there are plenty of good choices there as well.

There are a LOT of other hospitals in the Twin Cities area to look into if one of these don't work out too (assuming your wife is an RN).

Thanks golfgal,

The interview process with the mayo clinic was a joke. Wife interviewed on phone and was set up for face to face interview. When went through the process all seemed well however when we got back home no phone calls would be returned after 1 week and 2 phone calls and messages left. Finally the following week received a rejection letter. In the letter was told to apply for other positions. Wife called to find out about what went wrong was told not to apply for any other position. Since then and 3 tiers up the chain of command, there is still no answer and no one will return any calls. There have been 2 calls placed to the head of HR and she has not returned any calls back, found out she is out of office this week unitill wendsday. If we get nothing from her we will go farther with contacting someone higher up. Wife is a CVRN with 4 years telemetry experiance. She is on the code team, she is head of the scheduling committee and does the units schedules, she does charge nurse and has never had any incidents against her liscense or even been written up once. It is not so much about getting a position within the mayo clinic now as it is digging and finding out why she got told not to apply for any other nursing position within the hospital.

Wife is an RN and I am a EMT/Firefighter I am sure with all the hospitals there that we will find a fit. Have done research on both st. cloud and st. joes and both facilities look good. Also there are some good things about them on allnurses.com.

Thanks again

My honest opinion, I recommend St. Paul over St. Cloud. See one of my threads and you'll know why.

Saint Paul hands down. Incidentally, St. Cloud has a reputation of racism...

/\ And a lot of other things, IMO.
It is kinda apples to oranges. That said, I have always thought there was something wrong about Saint Cloud, Stearn County Syndrome. I doubt it is just me, but I bet someone will debate me. Oh well. I said it. Saint Cloud is an OK, small city in Rural Minnesota. Nothing spectacular. Just a decent place. An average State University. I would predict a small culture shock. Saint Paul is the second heart of a huge metropolitan area. There are good neighborhoods for kids in both City and Suburb. I think it is more predictable as to what you are getting from The Cities. Minnesota's public education is stellar, and the area is very family friendly. There are plenty of activities when you want them, but they are gone if you want them to be too. Hope you find what best suits you. Good luck with interviews.
