Hello, I am Ellen and I come from The Netherlands. I am 20 years old, and I want to come to Minnesota since I was 15. After seeing the movie Here on Earth I just fell in love with the locations, and ever since I found some shooting locations, like Welch, Red Wing and Faribault. Does anyone know more specific details about the filmlocations? Or details about the towns I named? I really want to come to Minnesota, probably next year and I really want to know the locations, so I can visit. It really is my dream, because from all the information I have learned it really is a wonderfull state. Thank you very much, Ellen

I used to live in Northfield and work in Faribault. (Northfield is about 20 minutes north of Faribault.) I don't want to sound negative, but I can't imagine what would make Faribault interesting to you. (I haven't seen the movie you mentioned.) It's a small-ish town, but the downtown area looks like an old city. Lots of concrete. They DO have a good school for the deaf. There is a small mall on the edge of town. People are nice.

Northfield is mkuch nicer--a much prettier town. But you didn't ask about Northfield.

Red Wing is a very nice town. It's small, too, but it is a lot prettier than Faribault. Lots of trees. I've only visited there a few times, but it was very nice.

I don't know anything about Welch. Never even heard of it.

Good luck.

I have never heard of the movie you mentioned, but if it was filmed in one of those towns and was beautiful, you are probably thinking of Redwing. I don't know about Welch. Faibault is just an average town on the prairie. Redwing is on the Mississippi River, and has many beautiful forested bluffs around it. If you are going to visit Minnesota, here are the places I reccomend going to: The Twin cities for the shopping and culture (the Mall of America is in Bloomington, a suburb next to Minneapolis), Duluth and the Lake Superior shore because it is gorgeous on the lake with forests and small mountains, and on the Mississippi River in the southern part of the state around Winona (which is the area Redwing is in).

Talking here on earth locations

hi ellen, i grew up in red wing and my uncle was an extra in the movie. red wing is a very nice town with friendly people. it is definitely a tourist town. it has it's own web site you can look up with info on what to do and where to stay. welch is just a small township right next to red wing. my dad lives there. the main town is where that diner in the movie was, and also where josh and lele's characters lived. it is very small. it is on the cannon river. people go innertubing down the river in the summertime. there is a restaurant and a post office there, but not much else. pretty though. i wouldn't plan on visiting in the middle of summer, though. hot, sticky, bugs. may and june are still good. northfield is about 20 minutes away from welch. another small town. that's where chris' character went to prep school. it's really a college. i don't think much was filmed in red wing itself, from what i remember. i'd have to see it again to know. but the area as a whole is very pretty. worth a visit. good luck!

Other movies filmed in Minnesota:

Iron Will (dogsled movie): filmed in and around Duluth and the North Shore of Lake Superior.

The Good Son (suspense, starring McCaully Caulkin--I'm sure I spelled that wrong): the movie is actually supposed to take place in Maine, I believe, but the big "cliffhanger" scene at the end is actually Pallisade Head, on the north shore of Lake Superior.

You'll Like My Mother (older movie, I think it's a murder mystery?): parts were filmed in the Glensheen mansion in Duluth. The mansion is still a tourist attraction today and open for tours.

Far North (stars Jessica Lange): takes place in northern Minnesota

North Country (recent film based on a true story about sexual harrassment in the iron mines): takes place on Minnesota's Iron Range (northern part of the state) but some of the movie was actually filmed in New Mexico. Very dark film that does NOT make Minnesota look like a very appealing place to live!

Grumpy Old Men (comedy): takes place in the southeastern part of the state (Mississippi bluff country) around the Wabasha/Red Wing area.

and of course...Fargo: filmed in various parts of the state. A lot of Minnesotans were annoyed not only by the overly-done accents, but by how the filmakers took various geographic "liberties" (i.e., showing the Minneapolis skyline from the south when the characters are supposed to be approaching from the north.)

I know there are others, but that's all I can think of for now! Hope you can make the trip over here

The HBO Movie Empire Falls with Ed Harris and Paul Newman was filmed around Waterville and Skowhegan. Good movie! Definitely worth watching.

I think Prince's Purple Rain was filmed in Minneapolis, but I'm not sure I'd brag about that one.

Angus (a great little movie!) was filmed in Minnesota. In Owatonna, I think.

Beautiful Girls. Another good movie. Even though the movie is supposed to be in western Massachusetts, most of it was actually filmed in Minnesota --- various Twin Cities suburbs, Edina, Hopkins, and Stillwater.

Parts of Ahnuld's Jingle All the Way were filmed in Bloomington and Edina.

I was just wondering what movie you were talking about, it sounds interesting. I know they have some out about Jesse James in the Northfield area. If you could please let me know what movie was filmed in Red Wing, it would be nice to know so that I can find it and watch it. Thanks.

Jingle All the Way was filmed here. One of the area nurseries supplied some of the shrubs and trees.
