So I need to come up with the absolute basics without breaking the bank for clothes. Especially for the kids since they are likely to have outgrown anything we buy by the time we move.

The kids are 7 and 9 and will absolutly want to be in the snow. They have never seen snow. The 7 year old gets upset in the freezer isle from the cold. My other is very cold hardy.

So what must we have? I'm thinking a heavy coat, mittens and boots...snow pants? A special under layer? Hats, scarfs? Ugh! I have no idea. Help?
You'll definitely want to buy heavy jackets for the whole family, along with gloves, hats, and scarves. Wool (or some other heavy material) socks make a big difference. Snow pants and thick boots are essentials for your kids, but not necessarily for adults, unless you want to join them in playing in the snow. It's been awfully cold up here lately (9F as we speak), but I find my feet do fine in sneakers and wool socks. It's really the upper part of your body that I'm concerned about, hence the recommendation for heavy gloves and a hat. I would also recommend something to cover your face for really cold and/or windy days, maybe a ski mask, although don't go near financial institutions with it on.
