Minnesota Democratic House candidate announces primary challenge | Grand Forks Herald

I'm here to shed some light on one of the many overlooked and forgotten parts of Minnesota: state house district 1B. Something interesting happens to be going on in the district for a change on the DFL side...

Currently, we have the typical centrist Democrat candidate, Michael Moore of Mentor, MN, and Bernie Sanders-type populist New-Deal Democrat, Erwin Rud of Fosston, MN. See, what's funny is the DFL endorsed Moore at the 1B convention and Rud was going to bow out, as is the norm. However, Erwin Rud has now announced he will instead move forward with his campaign and challenge Moore in the August primary.

This is good news for the district. A real, objective populist voice is needed in Saint Paul to advance the lives of Minnesotans everywhere - not just in Hennepin & Ramsey counties.

Fast facts:
- 1B is currently represented by Crookston Republican Deb Kiel.
- Prominent cities in 1B include East Grand Forks, Crookston, Fosston, and Red Lake Falls.
- During the 2016 MN caucus, both EGF & Crookston precincts had larger turnout on the DFL side than the Republican side - record DFL turnout in a district that leans +4 Republican. On top of this, both precincts voted in favor of Bernie Sanders - 55% in EGF, 60% in Crookston.

If you live in a conservative district, putting a liberal on the ballot in the general means you have no chance. Trust me, I live in one, and it never works. Party activists think they need some principled liberal while not realizing that they are just outnumbered.

they can hammer the republican on plenty of what their party botched in the last legislative session. If they are far right, it makes it an easier attack and of course they can tie them to Trump. Who am I kidding though, republicans do not endorse candidates that are not far right anymore, especially in rural districts.

Incumbents almost always have an advantage, and if the centrist wins, they stand a far better chance of holding the seat for more than 1 term.

I will tell you why this is not good news for your disrict - your endorsed candidate is now wasting resources they could be using against the real opponent to fend off this primary challenger who could not abide by the endorsement process. That will really **** off the party because that makes the final race ten times harder to win. The party will probably not put the resources in that they otherwise might have.
