Sir Paul McCartney is one person that has received that honor in Britain. Think of some famous Minnesotans you believe deserve that honor now or deserved it when they were alive. For purposes of this thread, they can still be living or dead.

Here are some people that I would select:

Alan Page (Former star defensive line player for the MN Vikings. Nicknamed the Purple People Eaters. Played in all 4 of their Super Bowls. Then studied law and became a MN Supreme Court justice from 1993 to 2015. Retired after reaching the Court's mandatory retirement age of 70).

Charles Schulz (Famous cartoonist known for Peanuts comic strip; still regarded as the best and most influential cartoonist ever by most several years after his death).

Herb Brooks (Was coach of the Univ. of MN hockey team and then best known for coaching the US Olympic team to an unbelievable upset over the Soviet Union and the gold medal in 1980).

Jessica Lange (Famous actress that has won several awards. Moved to Stillwater, MN for awhile while still in the prime years of her acting career. She is currently a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF).

William and Charles Mayo (The two brothers founded Rochester's Mayo Clinic back in 1889. Still regarded as the world's finest medical clinic today).

Great selections so far. I'd add:

Charles Lindbergh (first to fly across the Atlantic, wasn't born in MN but spent his formative years here)

Garrison Keillor (writer and radio personality best known for his A Prairie Home Companion)

Bob Dylan (highly influential musician, Nobel prize laureate)

Henry Plummer (co-founder of Mayo Clinic, "architect of modern medical practice")
