I might go to school in Mankato and I'm wondering about a few things. Now I dont want to sound intolerant and I'll let that be my preface. I grew up in a small town in S. Dakota where I've lived my whole life. And I graduated high school this year and was intending to enroll in college this fall but decided to push it back and work for a while. So thats what I do now. But I am ready to enroll for spring and had hopes of going to school in MN, specifically Mankato. But now I'm not so sure. See I didnt realize that MN had a large muslim population. I mean I knew it was somewhat large but I didnt or still dont have a full grasp on the magnitude of it. And like I said I dont want to sound intolerant, but I am someone who worries too much and who has lived my whole life in small town SD.

I still want to go to school in MN. But I feel like the time we're in now is sort of precarious and maybe not fully understood as far as the multi cultural challenges. So its hard to trust someone with a fully liberal perspective as its hard to trust someone who is downright conservative. And I've read how the PC liberals in MN are taking a stance of blind tolerance and aloofness to the influx of muslims which doesnt really sit well with me. My thing is this...to have a major influx of people who take a religion very seriously, ride or die is pretty scary in these times. (Obviously if it has extremist branches too.) But generally speaking people in western cultures dont take religion super seriously in the 21st century. Its more of a superficial thing or a holiday tradition. It literally goes as far as easter eggs and christmas presents...maybe helping your neighbor. But generally we have advanced to putting religion and religious platitudes in their right place. But to suddenly be surrounded by folks who have something that they still feel super serious about and are ride or die with, that also has extremist branches concerns me. So this really isnt an intolerance thing. Its just a facing facts thing from someone who worries easily about stuff and wants to feel safe when they leave farm country.

I guess on the whole I understand how disconcerting the U.S is in general what with flexible gun laws, the implications of horrible atrocities that span centuries...a place built on capitalism in general creates a lot of problems and tension in society. Its very hard for common people to save money and this leads to conflict. I understand already how brittle and dysfunctional this place is. Its hard to fathom introducing another element that could further amplify the agitation.

So my question is on the state of Mankato and on the state of MN as a whole. I want to go to college somewhere that I can feel safe and work toward a degree and I had high hopes of getting out of SD for a while. (MN has a reciprocity thing where you can go there for basically in state tuition.) But now as its coming down to the wire I'm really not sure about anything anymore and any feedback would be appreciated. I dont feel that I'm blowing anything out of proportion because like I said these are precarious times and not everything is in focus and everyone has a different agenda it seems. But maybe someone could point out something that would be relevant to changing or enhancing my perspective so I can come to a decision.

peace

It really would do you good to go to a school that has a variety of people with a variety of points of view. Perhaps after meeting these new people you might be less afraid of them. And really, most universities simply WILL have a variety of types of people as students - that's just the nature of university. Both USD and SDSU have a diverse student population, FYI.

But if you are too afraid to meet anyone who is different from yourself, and you want to go to a state school in Minnesota, perhaps you should think about one of the smaller schools like SWMSU in Marshall or Bemidji State or UM Morris or UM Crookston. There will still be different people, but maybe not so many as to be overwhelming for you.

Agreed that I don't understand your question even?

Not sure if you were making a political statement, a religious one, or just venting about the safety of our country?

Colleges tend to be diverse and liberal, regardless which you attend. MN tends to be a liberal state, Mankato is also a liberal campus. None of this is to say that one couldn't find their conservative pockets within the college or the state.

I DO think you are blowing things out of proportion (and I'm conservative!). It sounds like you're living in fear, always thinking about what COULD go wrong. That's no way to live. If you're honest with yourself, you have a much greater risk of being harmed driving on I-90 in the winter than you do by attending Mankato.

true I'm not really asking a question, mostly just trying to get some response. The thing is on an individual level I'm super liberal and believe in socialism and all that. I cant imagine going somewhere that puts high value on football or refers to students by the team name.

But this is more about the times we're in. I have to go somewhere for four years. MN is a very tolerant place and muslims are making it home. We've seen many examples of stuff going down in the tolerant EU. All I'm saying is 4 years isnt a short time and there could be things on the horizon that no one is aware of...flexible gun laws dont help. I'm aware that western culture is taking a hit and it might continue indefinitely. And the aloof liberal mindset doesnt sit well because its clear that the liberal elites worldwide have had an agenda that directly benefits their bank statements or just their self importance...idk if the same could be said about MN. At the same time I couldnt imagine identifying with people who watch football or collect guns.

Idk this is more about the times...like I said I cant help being someone who is painfully aware of what could potentially happen. Its really just my nature. Maybe I need to look at smaller schools like that one guy suggested.

Seems you need to experience the outside world, even if it starts in Mankato. Might be just what the doctor ordered. Your safety would hardly be a concern.

If you are that scared of getting out in the world, maybe you should just take online courses. Then again, there is more of a chance of your computer getting hacked than anything happening to you in the big city of Mankato.
