My husband left this week to take a job in the Winona area. He has rented a room in the area of East 4th street. He is looking for a possible thrift store where he could purchase some cheap cooking things. We are really tight on money so he needs cheap bargin store. He is a type 2 diabetic and I know he is trying to shave money but he really needs to eat a few good meals. A bag a chips isn't a good meal. Any advice where he could make a dollar last longer would be great.

Hi

I grew up in Winona (but don't live there now). When I do return, for a visit, I have visited several thrift stores, all near the area where you husband is living. Perhaps the easiest one to find is right across the street from Merchants Bank in the downtown area (probably walking distance from where your husband is staying, maybe one or two miles if he is way out on East 4th street). He could ask at that thrift store for other thrift stores in the area and how to get to them. There is another one further east on East 2nd or 3rd, I think. That is a large one and had lots of clothes, kitchen things, bedding and odds and ends.

There is a small bus service that runs through Winona. It goes from the East to West end of town, via downtown. That would be a handy way to get where he wants to go. The shopping tends to be on the outskirts of town, near Highway 61. The downtown area has a large'ish grocery store (Midtown Food) plus the Rochester Fruit and Vegie Market (near Huff and 3rd, by the Levy, west of downtown).

Best of luck with your move to join your husband.

Mari
