With 10,000 lakes there's gotta be plenty of sunken boats and ships within those lakes. I know Lake Superior has a ton, but what about our smaller inland lakes? I'm especially fascinated in those that are partially submerged.

Right. Of the estimated 10,000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes region, only about 350 of them are located in Lake Superior. Of those, about 50 wrecks are presumed to be within Minnesota waters. Most of Minnesota's shipwreck history can be found in Lake Superior.

There have been several ships, large ones, that have run aground in Duluth in the past several years. One of the most famous events happened just off of Canal Park which the boat was beached during a storm. Another a ship failed to make the corner off the the Decc Area and ran aground a few years back. An actual shipwreck was discovered a few winters ago just off Park Point, and there was also a partially sunk ship out side of McDonalds in Superior a few years ago also;

You may be VERY interested in an event called The Gales of November. Check it out.

Not sure about Superior, but if you go the very northern tip of Door County there is an island called Washington Island. And either a couple hundred yard off the mainland or the island, can remembered which, there is a wreck and old steel cables have washed onto the beach that are still part of the wreck offshore.

Edit: actually there is a glass bottom boat you can take from Bayfield that explore a couple of wrecks off the Apostle Islands.

I've heard sometime ago, 10 years maybe, in lake Minnetonka there are some paddleboats and maybe streetcars from early 1900, sunk in purpose to get rid of them. Not sure where on the lake.

In the Crosby area there are iron ore pit mine lakes. The mine equipment is at the bottom of some of those lakes and the water is very clear, spring fed. It would be pretty dangerous considering how deep some are. I saw a video a year ago of someone scuba diving in one. I've swam in one, with a like jacket on and wore a swim mask...it's really frightening to see the steep drop underneath you, I got vertigo from that. I've heard of people experiencing vertigo from that so I wore the life jacket, glad I was wearing a jacket.

There are probably some in Lake Superior. I think there is one near Duluth you can see without diving, not sure.

Though not in Minnesota, the wreck of the SS America (sunk in 1928) is close. It lies in Michigan waters just off Washington Harbor, Isle Royale - not far from Grand Portage in extreme northeastern Minnesota. The bow is only two feet underwater at Superior's normal elevation and is marked by a buoy due to being a hazard.

The Lake Superior Marine Museum in Duluth, has a large scale made accurate model of the Fitzgerald, as it lies on the bottom, showing great detail. Not sure if that museum is open yet though.

There is one on Lake Superior, there’s a paved turnoff few hundred feet past the Splitrock entrance on hwy 61 going north. A trail leads to cliff overlooking it I’ve be told. You also get a view of the lighthouse.
