Considering a relocation to Maine and have heard that it is similar to MN.
Anyone have knowledge on the similarities between ( Ely , specifically) MN
and Maine ( Midcoast area, North of Portland) ?
Not only the landscape and climate, but perhaps the local culture as well ?
Thanks for input.

Downeast Maine and the Northwoods of Maine are similar to central and northern MN in terms of landscape. Taxes are not good in ME as it has the highest tax burden of any state in the US. The cost of living is also high and it is a "bring your own job" kind of state.

I would recommend NH over ME. The Lakes Region of NH is somewhat similar to the Brainerd Lakes Region of MN, but not as far north. The town sizes in the two regions are similar with lots of local shops, restaurants, and golf courses. The retiree population is quite large. In terms of jobs, you really have to network and know people to get good ones usually.

In terms of the culture, the people tend to be more reserved, but will definitely help out those in need. In terms of politics, the area has a mixture of liberals, libertarians, and some conservatives. I think the populace tends to be more active in the smaller towns in terms of having events, festivals, town meetings, etc. NH, in particular, has a plethora of nicely kept small towns that are very clean and tidy.

Only if you are talking right along the shore. Downeast Maine and areas in the interior are substantially poorer with much less in the way of outsiders moving in.

No not at all. There are maybe some areas of Duluth that resemble Maine in the "rocky" ocean look. Maine is much more rural in my opinion. I think the whole states population is around 1mil in Maine. Maine's economy is also more depressed than Minnesota's.

Maine is a place Id love to visit, always have and probally will never get there...sigh I think its very similiar to Mn. with its hardwood forests and its trees.
Thats why Id like it there. That and its rural feel and old timey things to do.
Love that stuff the best
Thanks
