Just curious. I see so many posts about people lamenting the fact that they are "stuck" in Minnesota. As somone who enjoys it here and therefore is not in a position to comiserate with you, I have to ask: Why stay if you don't like it?

There are a handful of reasons I can think of that would be valid:

1. You are in a profession that can only be done in Minnesota. Perhaps you are a researcher at the U of M in a discipline that they are only doing here and nowhere else...

2. You married someone who will not move from MN. You have decided that your love for that person is more important than living in a place that you like

3. You are actively trying to move, but need to sell your house first (which is taking longer this year in 90% of the nation's markets)

4. You've been assigned here by the military

What other reasons could there be? Just curious. I've lived in places I didn't enjoy, and I promptly moved so I could be happy. I'm wondering why that isn't that case for so many of you who obviously dislike it here.

Waiting to sell my house and work! I will quit work when my house finally sells.

Generally speaking, I've found the best jobs are in the least desirable places to live.

MN is a great place for people who live to fish and hunt!

Finding a job is the biggest obstacle my wife and I face. It seems as though employers have a bias against out of state people. Luckily my wife has an interview in TX this week so if that pans out we're on our way. Then the next obstacle becomes selling the house.

I've been lobbying my wife for years to move to a warmer climate, so #2 applied for a number of years until she finally decided the Austin area looked good to her.

It's also hard to leave family and friends behind. I think that reason applies strongly to many MN natives. I personally don't think that's reason enough to stay someplace you don't like, but I know for many that issue trumps all others.

I believe that lots of people just have to have something to complain about. They sit there and write that they hate it where they live, but they don't do anything to move to a different area.

For as proud as Minnesotans are of their quality of life, most of us won't claim that it is the only place in the USA that you should consider living. If you like warm weather, go live in Florida. If you like the pace of the East Coast, I think there are plenty of jobs you could find out there.

Your work visa won't allow you to live anywhere else and Minnesota is the only state that offered you a job. . Truth is, I didn't hate Minnesota when I lived there, just the weather (which naturally improved the instant I relocated) and how hard it was to make new friends without knowing ANYone when I first moved there from England, but after 10 years I think I just about cracked both those problems.

We are waiting to sell our house. Just can't take the hit to the equity we wanted to walk out of here with the way the market is now. Plus my husband was waiting on a certification so that he can get a better job when we move out of here. I would move today, actually I would have moved back to Pittsburgh years ago but it's been hard to get my husband to feel he's got enough experience to get a good job elsewhere. With 4 small kids he wants to be sure we move to a stable job and housing. We are hoping/praying the market picks up and we can get out of here next spring without losing everything we've saved for.

Believe me, if it where my decision alone, I'd be long gone!

#1 reason to stay: Selling the house. If you have nothing, it is easy to just "pack it up". For those of us who have jobs and a house, it's not so easy. Our equity is tied up. Housing market stinks Been trying to sell so I can get to TX. #2 reason to stay... public schools (we do private school, so not staying for this reason) #3 reason...friends and family. #4...love the outdoors (fortunately the rest of the US has outdoors as well)

#1-4 reasons to leave: Cold weather, taxes, state laws and politics!

Once the house sells to quit tying up our money, the reasons to leave top the reasons to stay. Our relatives can come to visit us and my fam can winter with us

Just curious, where in TX are you off to when the time's right? My wife and I are actively trying to relocate to the Austin area.

Dallas burbs. Unsure where since neither of us have jobs there. Waiting to sell first prior to selling. Austin would be great, but hard to find a job I've heard.
