I've heard of Shattuck St. Mary's, but only recently; they have some serious training programs for ice skaters (hockey and figure skating).

In general boarding school really isn't part of the Minnesota culture. I know there are some around, and some kids go off to other parts of the country to attend them, but it's definitely not the norm.

I suppose if you're from Dublin you may consider Minnesotans to have a "weird" accent.

I am very familiar with Shadduck and St. John's Prep and unless you are a hockey standout, St. John's Prep is the better school of the two. The campus is beautiful as well as having the advantage of being on the campus of St. John's University.

I'm not very familiar with Cotter. But I know several people who graduated from Prep. Cotter is two hours from the Twin Cities and SJP is just over an hour. Prep is $36k/year for international students and Cotter is $29k. (you probably know that already)

Winona is about 2 1/2-3 hours south of the Twin Cities, St. John's Prep is about 1 1/2 hours North.

Winters are long and can get bitter cold. But we haven't had a rough winter in several years. Summer, spring, and fall are beautiful and mild.

Default I'm from Minnesota but live in Dublin, Ireland

Hi,

I grew up in Winona, Minnesota (where Cotter is located) but currently live in Dublin (Milltown, near Dundrum). The winters in MN are significantly colder than what one experiences in Ireland, even after the cold, and snowy, winter we had in Dublin this year. Minnesota has snow from around January until March and those months tend to be bitterly cold, below zero celsius, 32 Fahrenheit. The summers are much warmer (darn right hot compared to Ireland's summers) with temperatures of around 30 - 35 celsius not being unusual. Most homes have air conditioning in Minnesota (and good heating).

Boarding schools are not common in Minnesota. You'll find some boarding schools but most of the students will be day students, going home in the afternoon. Cotter is set on the lovely campus of what was St. Teresa. Cotter's campus is set in the heart of Winona, a town of around 25,000 people.

If you'd like me to answer any questions about life in Minnesota, please send me a private message with your phone number and I can call you (or I can send you my number, if you prefer). I haven't lived in Minnesota for many, many years but visit every two or three years, still have family all over Minnesota, so should be able to answer some of your questions.

Mari
