Mayfly invasion: Weather radar catches massive hatching event in Mississippi River - TwinCities.com

Yuck...I recall them using the snowplows to remove off the bridge in South St. Paul.

They only live a couple days. During those days, they can make outdoor life absolutely miserable. I remember being incarcerated in my camper at Lake Poinsett in SD one weekend because these things happened to decide to hatch at that moment. We played a lot of cards.

They should all be gone now but we'll be up to our armpits soon in June Bugs and those will be followed right after by July Weevils.

The June bugs have already arrived. One flew and attached itself to my shirt and totally caught me off guard. Of course my wife was present to observe my sudden surprised reaction and was quick to question my masculinity ....stupid June bugs.

june bugs to mayflies

apples to oranges

I never knew what mayflies were til I was 45 years old and worked night shift at a production facility located on the Mississippi river at Little Falls.

For 2 nights, all outside lights had to be turned off and the next morning some guys were assigned to take scoop shovels and cardboard barrels/drums and shovel the huge drifts of them into the drums to be put in the dumpster.

The Super America 24/7 place looses a lot of business those two nights as people don't want to fill up gas when the light area is solid a buzz with those mayflies.

( some people refer to them as " fish flies"

Assume the screaming helped and served a duo purpose of properly alerting the neighborhood. Seen an abundance of dragon-flies around here lately as well and as you all know they will sew up your mouths is given half-a-chance. I have found that screaming and waving your hands in the air is the prescribed preventative measure for these as well.
