I always had heard that the south was mostly republican?
Don't get me wrong, I love the south. I haven't met a southerner yet I didn't like.
I get a long with most everyone I meet.
I know 1 person in MS, some in OK, some in TX, some in NC, and one person in AL.
I've always loved the south. I was just told that in some rural parts of MS the people there don't really like northerners, I was afraid I would be isolated, possibly judge, and unwelcomed because I am from WI.
So I thought that if I mentioned my families heritage and that I had some ancestors who were Southern it might make a difference.

MS tends to vote Republican, but there is a connection to race, whether people want to admit it or not. My mom is a Democrat and many older whites are (those who remember the Depression and love FDR). The Republicans that I know are much more vocal because they assume most people agree with them. Because I'm not a Rep (or Dem, for that matter), I think they sound foolish, touting off their beliefs like everyone agrees with them. My mom and I look at each other and smile when this happens.

You won't have any problems with people because of your state of origin (WI).

When it comes to the war and such, I agree with the OP. However, I personally do not discuss the war unless it comes up (particularly when someone mentions the Confederate flag or something), and that is the only reason why I would, if the subject came up. Now, to the OP, when it comes to moving to other places it becomes a "When in Rome" situation, do as the Romans do, but DO NOT overdo it, it is possible to try too hard. I brushed up on all this myself, because in three weeks I'm heading to that little corner of the world on a road trip, so your not alone OP.
