Just got home from several days of visiting family and friends in Greenville. I noticed where the highway is going to route after getting off the bridge and Greenville, mainly the hwy. 82 section, is going to suffer more than it is now. The route is going to completely bypass Greenville. It think the plan is to run parallel with hwy 82 but on the south side of town, and eventually merge again with 82, close to Leland. Most of the town is migrating to the south so those that are there or are moving to that area will benefit. But the businesses that get a lot of their business from people stopping while traveling through (motels, fast food, etc.) are going to be in trouble. Highway 82 will eventually look like Highway 1 North.

Oh well. Better than the method they used when expanding 82 through Mathiston, essentially creating one perfect speed trap in 200 miles of freeway. When 82 is done through there up will spring a walmart, then dozens of ancillary businesses. This might be the best thing for the downtown area - it will become a slum for a time, then those with money will decide to rejuvinate, and so it goes...

I'll be happy with anything that keeps me from driving through Greenville. I already take the first right after the bridge to highway 1 and then a couple of back roads to the last stop light leaving Greenville. Even with all the work on the MS side, 82 is still a tiny, little road for most of AR.

The current Walmart is fairly new and only a few miles north on hwy. 1 from where the road is going through. I don't think they'll move anytime soon. From that particular area south to the new bypass is where everything is moving and building now.

Downtown is already in shambles but they have been trying to do some rebuilding. That will take a major undertaking.

That is hwy 454 which is exactly where the new road is going, parallel with 454.
