My son currently lives in Mississippi and works for a company in that state. However he was offered a position in neighboring Louisiana. Living in Mississippi and working in Louisiana how would he be taxed on the income and at what rates?

Thank you

Normally state taxes are withheld for the state you work in. You will then have to file state returns for the state you work in and the state you reside in. You get a credit for taxes paid in the state you work in and may have to pay additional taxes in the state you live in depending upon the difference in tax rates. I recommend you seek advise from a CPA in the area who knows the state law on this.

I've done this, you have to file a non-resident LA form along with MS. Taxes witheld to LA are credited.

Between my husband and I the amount is $12,000 for Mississippi state tax and we both work in Memphis. Basically $6,000 per person while residing in MS. There are no income taxes withheld from the state of TN. Not sure how that would work for employment in LA.
