The funniest part is that even dry counties allow things like wine production. But in MS it is legal to have a vineyard, legal to open it to the public (even in a dry county), legal to manufacture wine, but ILLEGAL to EXPORT that wine from the state! The only way for someone to obtain your wine is to visit your vineyard... crazy.

A dry county is a county were it is illegal to have alcohol. If you are pulled over and the cops find alcohol you will be fined 400$ for each type of alcohol. So if you have beer, wine, and rum, you will pay a 1200$ fine.

Counties in MS may be completely dry, or prohibit some things but not others. Some counties are try, but cities within the county are not.

it is weird, and nonsensical

Some counties will let you buy beer, but not wine or liqueur. Sometimes it is the reverse. You have to check before you travel into an area.

Here in our county you can not buy any booze and can not drink it in a restaurant unless the restaurant is a private club. To be a private club you need to have a book for all members to sign upon entering the restaurant. We all sign that book!!! It is known as the wettest dry county in the country.

The alchohal issue in the South is kind of silly. It is like bad comedy put into law.

"well when I am in this county I can drink if I shake my leg. But in this other county I can only drink if I twist my thumb and stand on one foot."

I'm fairly sure beer isn't on the cardinal sin list.

If religions are going to get blue laws passed they should have to pay taxes. That'll alter their moral compa$$...

They've crossed the line of seperation of church and state when "religions" impact free trade and
the ability of a business to make a sale.

Why assume it's just about religion? Can't an atheist be misguided? Can't someone who's fairly liberal get some misguided notion about protecting people from themselves? I don't think anyone assumes pot prohibition is a "religious" issue or just something agreed upon by a bunch of church going zealots - plenty of card carrying liberals see it as their duty to protect society from the evils of "drug use" - just as they see fit to protect us from owning guns. Try lighting up a cigarette ANYWHERE in public in the allegedly "liberal" California and see where that gets you.

This is not a religious issue; there are misguided folks from every walk of life. In fact, dry counties in the south are a remnant from prohibition of the 20's - and while it was moralists calling from the pulpit who may have led that charge, there were many agendas defending that misguided policy.

LOL Good one!

We get questions on the Texas forum as well from relocating northerners and other parts of the country -- where dry-counties are not very common -- asking exactly what they are.

Anyway, main reason I wanted to post was to share a little joke very similar to the one above. It goes: Buddists do not recognize the authority of the Pope, Jews do not recognize the authority of the New Testament, and Baptists do not recognize one another in liquor stores!

If I had to take a wild guess, it would be because religious people are the most vocal for keeping areas dry when the issue comes up for a vote.

I've witnessed a handful of counties in MS and AL vote on this issue and it is always churches that rally against it.

It is NEVER a league of angry misguided atheist, as you so put it.
