My husband & I are coming to MS from MO to be closer to family. The areas we are looking at are Southaven & Oxford. We have 2 children, 12 & 3. My husband is from Greenville so he is sure to be happy anywhere. We have decided Greenville is not going to provide us the kinda of living we would like. Let me explain:

1. Jobs are far & few between
2. I would like to keep my children in a "good" public school & not find that I have to put them in a private school for a good education.
3. Greenville is very segragated & I do not agree at all.

From what I can tell, Greenville will not provide us these things we need. (No disrespect)

I have been researching Southaven & Oxford. I would love to live in a town that had that small town feel. We love festivals, big plantation type houses, neighbors who like to bbq & know one another, parks, good food, going to the movies, hanging out at the lake, all that raising kid stuff. We like the idea of hanging out in Memphis once in a while for concerts or whatever but driving a little farther to be in a good town doesnt really make that much difference. Jobs are a factor as well. Any helpfulinsite would be so appreciated as I haven't experienced MS & am not sure what the two towns have to offer.

Thanks so much!

I grew up just over the river from Greenville and it has gone down hill since the '80's so I understand your reluctance to move there.

Southaven is part of the Desoto county school system. They have their own web site covering test scores. From what I've read, they do score at or near the top when compared to other MS schools.

Entertainment - You don't even need to drive to Memphis for festivals or concerts. There is an amphitheater at Snowden Grove Park that hosts shows ranging from Sugarland to Alice In Chains. Same with the Desoto Civic Center. Concerts range from Hank Jr. to Tool. The local hockey team plays there and they host the Gulf South conference college basketball tournament. The mid-south fair as well as springfest are both hosted here in Southaven.

Start at Southaven.org and there should be numerous links to investigate. Post as many question about Southaven, Olive Branch or Hernando and I'll do my best to answer them.

In DeSoto County, Hernando fits your description more than Southaven. Charming town square, farmers market on the weekends, some pretty older homes, nice public schools etc. You can't go wrong with Oxford, quite beautiful. Madison is also a great choice, winning an award a couple of years ago as best town in America for raising children. Corinth also has good public schools and a beautiful historic district and charming downtown. Tupelo is nice and prosperous.

Thank you all so much for your input. We are coming down in May & will be staying with family so we can check out a few of these towns.........and jobs lol. It will obviously be dependent on where the jobs are as well.

FaceTyme, please quit slandering Mississippi across these boards. As helpful as you think you're sounding most people will pass you off as a loon. I'm sure most people will agree with when me I say that most people who start hollering racist are usually the most racist people out there. Hopefully you found a state that is willing to harbor your clearly deranged perspective on community. Please don't come back and visit anytime soon! Mississippi is a wonderful, peaceful, state with plenty to offer if you don't come in ready to dredge up outdated stereotypes. This isn't the 1800's!

It's not a personal attack but it is obviously stereotyping at its best.

I agree that Southaven could be classified as a bedroom community since a lot of people here work in Memphis.

Redneck? Got any examples?

Hate blacks? Really? I have neighbors of all colors. I didn't set out to move into an integrated neighborhood nor did I try to move into a lily white neighborhood either. I chose this area because of the character of the people and don't care what they look like.

What's the job market like in Oxford? Obviously I would have more options in Memphis but I like the smaller feel of Oxford. Wondering if they just cater to the students more with it being a college town??????

Oxford will have a few hundred jobs in manufacturing opening soon - It's official: Olin ammo production to Mississippi

As others have said, Hernando still has the small town feel but close enough to Memphis that you can drive their for your job.
