Hi there, I am trying to start a women's club. I have a website and online forum created - just need members now.

But aside from online socializing, I'm trying to make it a real-life club focusing on women's issues such as domestic violence, motherhood, aging, etc. Another focus is on giving back to the community.

The forum's objective is to gather the people and use it to plan socializing and volunteer events.

The question I have is, do I need any type of license to start a club like this? I'm already thinking of making t-shirts, if I get enough people, for volunteer days. Even doing fundraising events to raise donations for local services in need (domestic violence shelters, animal shelters, etc.).

Is it legal in MS to create a club, name it, get people together, and advertise it?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Cecile

I don't know about Mississippi (I'm in Alabama) but you should know that in order to open a bank account, any entity (club, business, person) has to get a tax payer identification number or social security number from the IRS.
Where are you located?

I would think that if it is free right now, then you're fine. If you start charging for services or items, then you'd have to set get a business license. In the meantime, you can set up a website to just gather people together for no charge. I think that would be a good way to go because you'd get a feel for it, who is interested, what kinds of women are interested, and then re-design the site according to the interest you receive.

Good luck!
