High poverty, low education, and high violent crime rates are all present in Mississippi.

Because it's true. The quality of life in MS is very poor. The capital city has high crime and the police force is a joke. They ARE the criminals. Also MS does not have much of a middle class. The residents are either rich or poor -- no inbetween. You either live in a million dollar home or in a shack.

I read that 32% of the population over the age of 18 in Mississippi cannot spell their state's name.

Another 27% do not know the name of the river that shares the same name as the state.

Like most Southern states, Mississippi has historically invested very little in educating their population. The reason is racism. The white power structure saw little reason to invest in the education of their black citizens.

MS isn't special in the hurdles it had to overcome after slavery, civil-war, civil-rights struggles; and changes from agricultural economies to new economies. Georgia and to some extent Alabama show how a state with the same disadvantages can dig itself out.

Or we could just blame "racism " and be done with it.

Much of Mississippi also has a big shortage of medical doctors, because, why would a doctor want to work in a place as crappy as rural Mississippi?

Corruption is also massive. Just a few days ago, a court ruled that a Mississippi county had committed election fraud violations. Things like that are extremely common.

I wish Mississippi would improve...

Race issues are a major problem IMO. It has the largest percentage of blacks for any state.

There was an article on this... I have to find it

If people just learned to work together, this country would be such a better place.
