Hello,
After college I would like to work for a little while on a shrimp boat. Does anyone know what my first step would be? I don't know anyone in the industry. Is there a website where captains post is they need/want a deckhand?

I've known a couple shrimpers and if they need someone they usually go to their family. One guy used to go to the bar on a Sat night to find someone. Shrimping is still not quite back on its feet from the oil spill anyway. You'd have better luck getting a job picking up oil off the beach.

To the OP:

Dunno about fishing/shrimping jobs, but my impression is that they are hard to find and pay very little.

Done with college? Try This:
Merchant Marine Jobs | How to join the Merchant Marines

I spent several years circling the globe and I have not regretted a single one of them. I would go again if I were a young man.

There is a lot of deck hand jobs. However, I do know where I am (small town) there is little work at his time. Like pitboss said. Fishermen bar you may find someone or at least get your foot in the door persay. It does matter where you're at. Shrimp just got cut out a percent, Got some angry fishermen in a few areas. I'm trying to put posts out here for my mom's boyfriend. No luck. Like I told my mom's boyfriend- He may just have to go to Boston- Hang out down at the docks. Thats what I did in Alaska and got a deck hand job and now I'm in training for my A.B.S. Good luck P.S dannyallen1966 try and post a ad in the FREE Fishermen s Voice classified I believe they also have a website too. Or post ad in the FREEPRESS. those are local free news papers in Maine.. Hope that helps. Cheers

WHAT??!! You mean to tell us you are taking responsibility for your own life and your own future and paving your own way through the minefield they call adult maturity?

If I weren't already married, I'd propose.

PS....Lotsa people don't know. Tell them what an ABS is.
