I'll be driving across Mississippi on I-10. (What do ya'll call that part of the state? The "foot"? Or just the "coast?).

Anyway, the drive is just an hour or so, it looks like, but I'll have a whole day to spend. Are there any specific landmarks, historical sites, famous local places, etc. that would be a must-see along that route?

Thank you!

I would get off I -10 as you enter the state and drive Hwy 90. You will see the coastal towns.

Like mccarley said, get off on 90. You will be driving directly along the coast, with the beach on your side when driving along 90. I-10 is not along the coast itself and doesn't really pass through much. You will pass through Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs, and Pascagoula if you take 90.

For some Civil War history, stop at the Beauvoir (Jefferson Davis's home). When driving along 90 in Biloxi, you can pull over and take a tour and see the home which is right along the beach (highway 90 is in-between the house and beach). You will pass some beautiful homes along the beach too, although much of this area is still recovering from Katrina, and Pass Christian has some very nice ones. I do not live in the area, so a local can tell you some other things to see though!

Too bad you couldn't have seen the coast before Katrina, it's just not the same place anymore. Lots of empty lots where beautiful old homes used to be on Highway 90. It's coming back, but with a different vibe.

Take notice of the trees that were damaged by Katrina in the median on highway 90, they have been carved into different shapes pertaining to the coastal area.

For lunch or dinner, try Mikeys on the Bayou at 5600 Washington Ave, Ocean Springs. One of my favorite places for seafood on the coast.

Take an excursion to Ship Island if you have time.

I'm not sure which way you are coming through but if you are coming from the east through Alabama i would suggest getting off at exit 50 to go down to hwy90, if you get off at the first exit and drive through pascagoula, Gautier, and ocean springs there is nothing to see just businesses no water or beach and driving through ocean springs is hellacious at most parts of the day. just get off I10 at exit 50 you'll be on Washington avenue and take that road south about 5 miles you'll go over a small bridge into ocean springs come out by burger king at 90 and take that right and you'll be on 90 going across the ocean springs Biloxi bridge which has nice views of the water, brings you into Biloxi and the rest of 90 takes you along the beach the rest of your drive through the state. I agree with the other poster, the coast is nothing like it was before katrina. as soon as you get into Biloxi there are casinos, the isle capri, hard rock casino, the grand casino, the beau rivage, and further down 90 is the treasure bay casino. on the back bay of Biloxi there is the ip casino and boomtown casino (my favorite one lol). There are several resturaunts along 90 too. there's also the mardi gras and katrina museums although I'm not sure if their open yet. There's also the ohr okeefe museum of art in Biloxi on 90. There's the jefferson Davis home and presidential library. For activities not much, they just opened up a goofy golf and go kart place across from the beach. In gulfport there is the island view casino. One you get past gulfport the area is pretty empty through long beach, pass christian, waveland, bay st Louis but its a nice drive along the beach last time I went through there there was a lot of road construction. In bay st Louis there is also the NASA stennis space center. I'm not sure what days you are driving through but check out wlox.com they list weekend activities around this time of year there are all kinds of festivals going on, last week was the boat races and the bay st Louis bridge festival. Hope this helped and beware of the crazy drivers lol
